Wednesday 27th May 2009, 11:30AM BST.

BUS 4 TS 26A bus driver and an elderly passenger were injured when a single decker veered across a road and hit a tree.

Choice Travel, the operator of the 329 service which crashed in Bloxwich today blamed “driver error” for the accident.

The man, aged in his 50s, suffered a head injury and the female passenger, believed to be in her 80s, injured her hip. They were both treated at Walsall Manor Hospital following the accident in Ingram Road yesterday, while other passengers were treated at the scene by paramedics.

The bus, which was carrying five passengers, slammed into a tree which uprooted and snapped in half on impact.

Police closed Ingram Road for almost two hours following the crash involving the bus, which was previously owned by doomed Walsall travel firm A2Z.

It is not yet known what caused the vehicle, which was travelling from Field Road towards Blakenall and Walsall, to swerve.

Choice Travel general manager Steve Elms said: “There is an investigation underway at the moment.

“The driver was checked over at hospital has been given a day off to recover.

“The cause of the accident is looking like driver error. The vehicle was recently given a check over and was fine.

“When the driver returns to work we will complete our investigations.”
