Albion legend Cyrille Regis has called for manager Tony Mowbray to stay and rebuild after he was linked with the Celtic job.

The Baggies boss is favourite to succeed Gordon Strachan, who resigned after surrendering the Scottish Premier League title to Rangers on Sunday.

Regis believes Mowbray must stay, despite relegation from the Premier League.

The former striker said: “He certainly has his own style of play. Albion fans know that, despite being relegated, they can see what he is trying to achieve.

“They see a good style of play and they know that there are financial constraints on clubs.

“He needs to stay and invest in two or three quality players.”

West Bromwich marathon runner and lifelong Baggies fan ‘Blind Dave’ Heeley agrees and reckons Mowbray is the best man to get Albion back up to the top flight.

The Baggies supporter said: “I can’t think of anyone out there with the substance to do the job in his place. If he goes now it will take a new manager a couple of seasons to build a team and get back to the Premier League.

But Vic Stirrup is the Baggies longest serving season ticket holder and believes Mowbray’s time is up.

The 90-year-old said: “I’ve never been a big supporter of him.”
