Festival’s Mystery Gig star unveiled
Tuesday 26th May 2009, 11:30AM BST.
The star to lead Lichfield Festival’s Mystery Gig has been revealed as famous folk artist and Mercury prize nominee Seth Lakeman.
The West Country folk violinist and singer will perform at the Lichfield Garrick on July 16. Seth, who is famous for folk classic White Hare and whose fourth solo album, Poor Man’s Heaven, shot into the Top 10 album charts, will be performing in the intimate set up of the theatre.
Tickets go on sale for the first time today from the Garrick box office.
Festival director Richard Hawley said: “We announced in our booking brochure that among the more than 50 events and 400 artists, there was one we couldn’t tell you about – the Mystery Gig.
“I am delighted to now reveal that it is Mercury Prize-nominee Seth Lakeman.
“I have wanted to bring this highly energetic and compelling singer, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist to Lichfield for years. It is very exciting that he is finally coming.
“His sound, while remaining firmly rooted in folk, has moved from an acoustic-based feel to a fuller, rockier sound.
“He gives everything to every performance, in a totally compelling and energetic way. It’s as if he performs like there is no tomorrow and often his violin bow, and occasionally even his violin, are left in tatters at the end of performances.
“Witnessing that kind of commitment in performance is increasingly rare these days but the opportunity to see it in an intimate space like Lichfield Garrick Theatre is even rarer.”
He joins a prestigious line-up of other performers including Deep Purple’s Jon Lord, City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra (CBSO) and classical singers Alfie Boe and Elin Manahan Thomas.
The festival starts on July 9 and closes on July 18 with a performance by the CBSO at Lichfield Cathedral followed by the traditional firework finale.
