The voices of the Albion faithful today called for manager Tony Mowbray to stay with their club in the face of potential interest from Scottish giants Celtic.
Blogger Jarrod Hill, video blogger Pete ‘Hilltop Baggie’ Danckert and supporters club chairman John Homer have led the chorus of support for their manager to stay at the Hawthorns rather than head back to Parkhead.
Mowbray spent four years as a player held in high esteem by the Bhoys and is also highly thought of as a Scottish Premier League boss from his time at Hibernian, where he picked up the Football Writers’ Manager of the Year award in 2004.
But he is held in similar regard by the Baggies supporters, after leading the club to the Premier League with the club’s first title in many of their lifetimes.
They may have come straight back down, but Hill is among those who wouldn’t swap him for anyone.
He said: “It’s going to be tempting for Mowbray, how many times do a club of Celtic’s size come in for a manager? It’s something he has to seriously think about, if he is offered the chance – which it’s looking like he might do.
“I can’t say for sure, but I reckon the majority of our fans wouldn’t want to see him go. The show of support for him at Blackburn was our way of telling the manager that we are behind what he wants to do.
“This season may have ended badly, but the style of football he wants to play would suit any fan of the game.”
The backlash of supporters who could see their love affair with Mowbray abruptly end cannot be under-estimated, with Danckert – firmly in the ‘Pro-Mowbray’ camp – hoping he will not be let down.
He said: “I would be extremely disappointed if, given the loyalty he has been shown by the fans, the manager went to Celtic. We all bought into this blueprint of his and, despite relegation, he has been given carte blanche to do as he feels is right.
“Tony Mowbray knows what the fans think of him, I believe he was really taken aback by how the fans reacted against Liverpool, by applauding him even though we had just gone down.
“But football can be fickle – sometimes you have to think of your own future. He will know that.”
Homer has seen it all in his 44 years as a fan, but – like some many of his peers – has only seen a league title under Mowbray’s stewardship.
While he would share the fans disappointment, he has seen this happen before and warns that whatever happens the club will go on.
He said: “We would all be disappointed if the manager decided to go to Celtic, but not completely surprised. He has got emotional ties to that club, so it’s something he would have to seriously think about.
“Albion have been through this before and come through it, Ron Atkinson went to Manchester United but he wouldn’t go anywhere else, Ossie Ardiles went to Tottenham but he wouldn’t go anywhere else, so on and so on.
“But whatever happens I will always respect Mowbray – I had never seen a title in 44 years as a fan before he took charge.”

TM’s style of play can only be successful, by winning trophies at the highest level, with world class footballers backed up by a huge, yes HUGE, budget. Something sadly that appears to be light years away at the Hawthorns unless JP has something almighty big up his sleeve. Yes, I would love to see the time when the Baggies finish 3rd again in the top tier but unfortunately with the current chairman this ain’t gonna happen. TM has his ambitions and if that alone takes him away from the Hawthorns then so be it. I read over the weekend that cracks are beginning to appear betweem TM and JP (20 man squad) and if this is JP’s way of getting at TM then TM he will be best out of it and JP would not then be tarnished by not having to fire him. Personnally I don’t beleive JP has the same desire as us Baggie fans(success on the pitch)and their lays the problem. JP measures success in the cash column alone, we witnessed that from the Premier club credit ratings issued not so long a go. How many more chances for JP??????????. How successful has he been getting a sponsor????? How successful has he been in selling part of his shares for financial input in the club????? He’s hanging on for the best deal that suits him first, the club second and the supporters last.

I don’t want him to go but of he does we will get over it. Maybe he can use it as a bargaining ploy with JP re squad size.
If it is going to happen lets get it sorted quickley so the new man can get his squad together.

2,dead right. If its going to happen then go now Tone.We need to know sooner rather than later what your intentions are.To be honest i could not see him turn it down if the job is offered. After all the opposition isn’t much is it,in the SPL.He would be in Europe etc.,and most likely top of the league. So Tone if you are going? go now and then we know where we stand.
