Villa trio handed call from Capello
Monday 25th May 2009, 9:52AM BST.
Villa trio Gareth Barry, Emile Heskey and Ashley Young have been named in the England squadÊfor the World Cup qualifiers against Kazakhstan and Andorra.
There is also a recall for Albion goalkeeper Scott Carson. But there is no place for Gabby Agbonlahor or James Milner in the 24-man party, meaning the Villa pair seem certain to be named in Stuart Pearce’s squad for this summer’s European Under-21 Championship.
Elsewhere, Gary Neville is in line to become the most-capped England full-back of all time after being handed a surprise call-up by Fabio Capello.
After spending more than two years battling injury since making his last appearance against Spain at Old Trafford, Neville might have considered his Three Lions days to be over.
Even this term he has hardly been a regular at Manchester United, and, although he did play at Hull yesterday, he is only expected to be on the bench in Rome on Wednesday when Sir Alex Ferguson’s men take on Barcelona in the European Cup final.
If the 34-year-old is picked for either match in next month’s World Cup double-header against Kazakhstan (June 6) and Andorra (June 10), he will equal Kenny Sansom’s record for a full-back of 86 caps.
Neville will scrap it out with Glen Johnson, who missed Portsmouth’s defeat at Wigan yesterday with a minor hamstring strain, for the right to face Kazakhstan in Almaty.
England squad: Carson (Albion); Green (West Ham); Robinson (Blackburn); Bridge (Man City), A Cole (Chelsea), Ferdinand (Man Utd), Johnson (Portsmouth), Lescott (Everton), Neville (Man Utd), Terry (Chelsea), Upson (West Ham); Barry (Villa), Beckham (LA Galaxy), Carrick (Man Utd), Gerrard (Liverpool), Lampard (Chelsea), Walcott (Arsenal), Wright-Phillips (Man City), Young (Villa); C. Cole (West Ham), Crouch (Portsmouth), Defoe (Tottenham), Heskey (Villa), Rooney (Man Utd).
