Wolves reject big-wage stars

Saturday 23rd May 2009, 11:30AM BST.

solcampbellWolves have rejected the chance to sign former England World Cup stars Sol Campbell and Nicky Butt.

It is understood the club have been offered Campbell, Butt, former England man Alan Smith and Campbell’s Portsmouth central defensive team-mate Hermann Hreidarsson amid the avalanche of offers from agents following their return to the Premier League.

But the club’s management are refusing to buckle to the kind of flawed moves that left a financial drain on the club last time they were promoted six years ago, when expensive free transfers such as Oleg Luzhny and Steffen Iversen flopped.

Instead, they remain committed to bringing in Premier League experience ‘with legs’ who aren’t seeking a last pay day.

Portsmouth defender Campbell, 34, is earning upwards of £80,000 a week and is on a Bosman free transfer.

His 2002 World Cup team-mate Butt, also 34, signed a new one-year Newcastle deal in January to the end of next season.

But he earns around £60,000 a week and Wolves remain highly sceptical of a return on their money for such an outlay.

Smith, 28, still has two years left on his Newcastle contract, but he’s on similar money to Butt and Wolves won’t entertain that sort of outlay, even by paying a subsidised part of his salary in a year-long loan deal.

Hreidarsson, also 34, who has been relegated with Wimbledon, Ipswich and Charlton, is also available on a free. Although the Icelandic defender is on a more modest salary, Wolves aren’t keen to take a gamble on a player with so much of his career behind him, with McCarthy committed to a high energy work ethic.

The Wolves boss has returned from two weeks of scouting in Europe and hopes his transfer plans will start to fall into place once seasons across the continent end over the next fortnight.

Wolves also remain cool on a move for Villa striker Marlon Harewood. It’s understood they are unwilling to shell out wages of in excess of £30,000 a week for the £2m-rated 29-year-old.

Good to see the club have learned from years gone by with these money grabbers not being entertained.
Although experience is necessary, if their legs have gone why should we take them on now?

Don’t buy them because of the name, get them for what they can bring to the team.

Good work Wolves, keep it up!!!

    The Usual Suspects

Whilst I agree with NOT signing “journeymen” on high wages on free transfers – I do believe that a few of them CAN add invaluable influence and experience to the “young & hungry” squad

I hope we have learnt something from Boggies attempts this season in the Prem as they may have players that have shown promise BUT a few of the more talented ones at the Albion have taken a while to “gel” and by that time the season was more or less over

Personally I wouldnt mind seeing Dean Kiely and one or two others brought in from Albion as Kiely is very experienced and was part of the Albion team that actually started to win games in the Prem

I hope that this article is totally incorrect; BUT again as I have said before – this “sensible approach” may well be the case for say – Marlon Harewood, Nicky Butt etc BUT Imv I do believe that there are Prem Proven Players that can act as major influence on our “young & hungry” for our Prem campaign and as Greening at Albion said on Sky TV “we play some good stuff; but are naive and really needed experienced Prem Players this season”

It would be great to bring in players with potential BUT If the club has too many “young & hungry” – Imv more often than not – we will end up on the wrong end of results next season

I dont see the difference between paying a sizeable transfer fee plus moderate wages/ bonus deals or a free transfer with a sizeable pay deal – If you add up the transfer fee plus wages etc and make the comparison – it adds up to more or less the same money???

IF the player has the RIGHT credentials and CAN make a difference to our squad in the Prem WHY not bring in 2 or 3 to bolster a very inexperienced team???

The other option is to try and persuade the “best of the Championship” ala Gomez – Swansea; Croft – Naarwich – Johnson – Cardiff etc

If the article is to be believed – It may well be a case of Wolves saying “we will pay the going rate” BUT Who’s going rate are we talking about???

ACTIONS speak louder than words – Pull you’re finger out Wolves!!!

Zamora, Johnson, Konchevsky and Murphy. Four players from the Premiership with experience but also some hunger too!

That is supplemented by a crop of good foreigners who are happy to be part of a team rather than being self-seeking….Hangelund, Dempsey and Pancil.

I believe this article should be taken lightly, considering there are no quotes from someboby connected to the club, or anyone in general for that matter.
We openly declared an interest in Sami Hypia, who would have commanded sizable wages and falls into the “swan song” age bracket.
I do agree that going for has-beens is not the way forward. However experience is essential, and it will not come cheap from anywhere.
I personally dont think Sol Campbell would be a bad signing for one season, provided his wages could be lowed to a lower level.

The thing that is most pleasing is that, judging by comments 1 – 13, our fans as well as management can see that over the hill players are not the answer.

Experience can only be gained by “doing”. Foley, SEB, Kightly et al are all inexperienced, but they’ll be OK. Along with the rest of our squad, they have CHARACTER & ABILITY. That’s more important than experience.

We had set backs last year and they dusted themselves off and came back stronger each time. We’ll have set backs next season, oh they’ll come thick and fast. But I hope we recruit along the lines of character and ability…that’s going to be our forte.
These boys are going to grow up fast next season, get some quality in to cover and plug a few key positions and we’ll have enough IMO

YOU CAN’T COMPARE KEEPER LIKE SWARTZNER OF FULHAM WITH HENNERSEY WHO WHILE O.K WOULD MAKE A GOOD RESERVE KEEPER NEXT SEASON.

Totally agree that we don’t take these players looking for a last wage packet. What we have to think about though is that we do need some quality premiership players who will demand these wages.

We are probably not even going to go over £15000 a week so that rules the young under 21 internationals out that some fans are wanting. Mancienne is probably going to everton and he is only being offered £15000 a week. Where are the young and hungry players going to be when the pressure is on and that is where we need quality experienced players

Yes Mick has been scouting in Europe and hopefully will get a Gem from what he has seen. Sadly though you cannot run a premiership team on a shoe string.

Lets hope we did learn some lessons from our last time in the premiership. That we invest wisely and prepare and add to the team in order that we can move on and stay in the prem.

(with respect to all sides mentioned )What i would like to see is a section of seats for mixed supprters for excample any season ticket holder could apply for say the liverpool game and his usual seat could be made available to a wolves fan , in return he could get a pair of seats
in the mixed stand and then he could enjoy the occasion with his liverpool supporting neighbour or work mate or uncle . 11 Danny Murphy – available on a free – this is the type of Prem Proven Player we should seriously consider imv – Its great to have “young & hungry” – In the Championship you can “bounce back” as the gap between the teams is not as great
IF Wolves dont get the balance right before pre season starts – that doesnt give us a chance of getting the players settled in and before you know it – we’re fighting in the bottom 3

The RIGHT quality imv is extremely important to allow the other “young & hungry” to settle in and get used to it – Albion chose to bring in talented relatively unknown players – and the likes of Luke Moore (makeweight for Curtis Davies deal) and we all know the rest!

We’re scouring europe for players now – I hope that the players we are looking at can adapt quickly to the Prem

MM wont have much time to “tinker” with the back four and team – so I also hope that he uses pre season to get this right

MM knows it will be a totally different challenge in the Prem – so there will be NO room for sentiment and favourites – these players will be a luxury we cant afford – no matter how much of a “shift” they put in

In the Prem “Quality & Experience Counts & Costs” – We dont need a whole squad of these Prem Proven Players straight away – maybe 2 or 3 signings with a couple of loanees added to make up say 5 – that would be a good start imv – and then look at it again in the Jan window

(I would also say that signing a few best of Championship players could be useful in addition to the above)

Alan Smith, what a joke. I cannot think of a player who looks, acts & plays as badly as he does. That would be a sad day to see him in a Wolves shirt. He moans and spits and is abusive to referees and if he came to the Wolves would not be a good influence on team mates, younger kids coming through and the crowd. Apart from Robbie Savage & Craig Bellamy he is absolutely a player we should avoid. Even Joey Barton has better manners???

Sure we need to strengthen, but what we don’t need are a bunch of highly paid old men, no longer able to cut it and looking for an easy touch. We need players who want to improve (and prove) themselves with a little bit of experience of the big time, if possible. Big-Time-Charlies – NO! I for one and probably the only one would not take any of them and run with what we have, supplemented by some more non-league potentials. Even if we only spent a year in the Prem but still built on the experience with our current squad I would be happy with that. No I am not a person who is happy with second best and that goes with age old guys like campbell wanting a fortune and playing when he feels like it. Better to have a team who play for each other week in week out whatever league you are in.

As for Matt Murray it really is a shame for the guy because he could/would have been brilliant at the top level and I always thought he was the best keeper in England at the time we went in 2003, however if he was a racehorse he would have been shot years ago. We had a guy like him before called Tony Daley. Tony went on to do a fantastic job as the fitness coach and hopefully we will keep him at the Molineux and not lose him like our last goalkeeping coach. As for Mr Murray I sincerely wish him all the best but he will never be reliable enough injury wise to be depended on.

    Well said Axel !
Hard to say Nicky Butt “made it ” in the Premiership. A decent role player at Man Utd playing in the shadows of world class midfielders, he didn’t come through at Newcastle when handed the keys. No other club would have persevered with him for so long. As for Sol Campbell, Wenger saw that his first touch, positioning and ability to read a game were suspect so he was let go. Players like him however survive outside of the top four(see Richard Dunne). Wolves just don’t need to pay out that kind of money. There is plenty of time and plenty of talent at good value all over Britain,Europe and beyond. Below average players such as Smith and Harewood will latch on somewhere but hopefully not at Molineux

the one player id like to see at wolves next year is kevin nolan if newcastle go down. i know hes not done much for them since he left bolton but hes got the workrate, hes at his peak age, (28/29 i think) and a combative ball winning goalscoring midfielder, im sure hed be willing to take a drop in wages in exchange for premiership football, and im sure if we offered newcastle 3 or 4 million they would snap your arm off to get him (and many others) off their wage bill.

    The Usual Suspects

58 tch tch – “sticks and stones” – Have you forgotten the last time we were promoted?
The BS that came from Mr Moxey about not having enough time because of going up via Play offs etc the last time we went up is probably on most Wolves fans minds – as Moxey is well known at coming up with “spin” as I said “Pull your finger out Wolves – other clubs wont be waiting around – ACTIONS speak louder than words!

PS Yes we ALL know that the clubs are not supposed to be “doing business” BUT do you really think that stops any of the more proactive clubs from talking to players agents and moving matters on at a pace now?

Try reading what I actually said in my comments before having a rant about 1 line in the whole posting or are you incapable of having a discussion without having a rant?

No doubt there are a lot of ideas floating around about who will be joining Wolves in the summer and I’d just like to post this comment to see who the Wolves fans would want to see in our midfield.

I do believe a good recruitment for our midfield would be Liam Lawrence (Stoke).

    Any thoughts?

i think we will see some action in the next two weeks. I do not envy mm though. I like the look of gooch. However i think we need two hard tackling centre midfield players.

    I am still of the opinion that “young and hungry” is the way forward,premier league experience or not.Try this lot;
Mancienne (get him at any price)
    Beckford
    Naughton
    Gomez
Keep the faith with what has served us well in the past.
