Mystery of man is still running on
Saturday 23rd May 2009, 8:03AM BST.
For more than 20 years one mysterious jogger has been seen pounding the streets – a daily routine which has given him the legendary nicknames The Running Man and the Walsall Forrest Gump.
The unidentified runner has captured the hearts of the public who have filmed him on his travels and have posted the videos on video sharing internet site YouTube.
The videos capture his boundless energy as he runs through the streets of Walsall and Birmingham wearing his distinctive jogging bottoms, white fleece, hat and rucksack.
What makes him even more enigmatic is that he never answers people who call out to speak to him.
One person who posted a message on the internet even complained The Running Man had run into him while he was standing on the pavement and carried on as if nothing had happened.
Web discussions suggest he is known as Errol. Some people say he has been seen running the same routes for the past 26 years.
He is regularly spotted running down the Chester Road from Birmingham which takes him into Streetly. He has been seen running down the Sutton Road and Foley Road but witnesses have seen him running as far away as the Castle Vale area of Birmingham.
Stuart Clements, aged 36, from St Annes Road in Willenhall, said he had seen him many times.
“He is always wearing the same clothes no matter what the weather is like,” he said. “He really has become quite a phenomenon. He reminds me of Forrest Gump who kept on running and running in the famous film.
“He must run many miles a day. I would love to find out who he is. It is such a mystery.”
