Martis misses Rovers trip
Saturday 23rd May 2009, 9:59AM BST.
Albion defender Shelton Martis needs a double hernia operation and will miss tomorrow’s final match of the season at Blackburn.
The Dutchman will not get the chance to bounce back from his costly defensive error against Liverpool after being diagnosed as needing surgery.
And on-loan centre-back Ryan Donk, who has been told he will be leaving the Baggies after tomorrow’s match, might have to partner Jonas Olsson as Abdoulaye Meite is nursing a back injury.
But manager Tony Mowbray is hoping to welcome back one of his injured left-backs as the curtain comes down on the top-flight campaign at Ewood Park. Mowbray hopes either Paul Robinson (ankle) or Marek Cech (hamstring) will be fit.
“They both trained yesterday but we are still waiting to see the reaction,” said Mowbray. “In an ideal world one of them would be fit and they have both trained.
“Shelton is awaiting a double hernia operation. Meite will be touch and go. We will see whether he comes through training.”
Mowbray is still without Graham Dorrans (foot) and James Morrison (heel) along with long-term casualties Ishmael Miller and Neil Clement (both knee). But he is urging his team to end their season on a high.
He said: “We have to make sure we finish the season off as professionally as we can.
“We have been having that conversation and they are very good pros. Let’s finish the season off properly and not let it drift away. That has been the message all week.”
Almost 3,000 travelling Baggies fans will follow their team with every visiting supporter given a Mowbray mask to show their support for the manager.
