Valladolid friendly for Wolves

Friday 22nd May 2009, 10:30AM BST.

real-valladolid-12Wolves have attracted Spanish La Liga outfit Real Valladolid to Molineux for their final warm-up game before the Premier League season kicks off.

Valladolid, currently mid-table in the Spanish top tier with two games left, will be bringing an array of past and present internationals to face Wolves on Saturday August 8 (3pm) – seven days before the big kick-off.

Boss Mick McCarthy welcomed the arrival of the first top-flight continental opposition to Molineux since Portuguese side Boavista in 2003.

He said: “We can’t play another Premier League team to complete our preparations but we wanted a game which would provide us with a similar test.

“I think any team you take out of the top division from the likes of Spain or Italy would give you that test and so it will be good for us to take on Real Valladolid.

“They’ve generally had a good season and produced some impressive results, so will give us just the sort of game we need the weekend before the start of the season.”

Having broke records winning the Spanish equivalent of the Championship in 2006-07, Valladolid have cemented their place in La Liga and look like improving on last season’s 15th placed finish.

In fact they would have been pushing for a Europa League spot, but for a dip in form which has seen them fail to win any of their last nine games.

A promising first half of the season included a 1-0 win over Real Madrid, and the squad currently boasts a number of potential rising stars.

Highly-rated Sergio Asenjo is the current Spanish under-21 keeper and has been linked with Barcelona in recent weeks.

Wingers Pedro Leon on the right is another under-21 international who has been linked with Chelsea, while Jonathan Sesma on the left has attracted interest.

Of the more experienced players, defender Jose Garcia Calvo and striker Victor Manuel are both full Spanish internationals.

Midfielder Nestor Canobbio has also won eight caps for Uruguay.

The game against Valladolid – Wolves’ only home friendly – concludes their pre-season line-up for the new season.

Rest of first team programme: July 10 Perth Glory, July 15 North Queensland Fury, July 21 Walsall, July 25 Bristol City, July 28 MK Dons, August 1 Doncaster and August 4 Scunthorpe.

Ticket details for the Valladolid game will be announced closer to the date.

Is this the best we could do LOL.

This is a very attractive fixture.

Valladolid, like Wolves, mainly play with two wingers. Pedro Leon who plays on the right is a member of the current Spanish U21 squad ( though I think he is a little older) and started his career at Real Murcia. They are renowned as one of the most attack minded teams in Spain.

I hope we get a good crowd as I think it should be a great test for Wolves.

Sounds like a useful run-out but to be fair we could be playing Barcelona and I still wouldn’t go. Friendlies are always a bit of a let down and it’ll probably be about 25 quid a ticket.

Why not one of those teams??

I seem to recall just last season the mighty Dundee Utd had a friendly against Barcelona.

It seems a very big let down to only have one Home friendly against a team half the fans aint heard of.

I would of liked us to of asked Celtic or Rangers. What ever happened to the supposed friendly with Celtic as part of the Henri Camera loan deal?

now I’m not a wolves friendly historian but I think I remember going to a Wolves Barcelona friendly about a decade ago – they put out a reserve XI who we had never heard of, we barely got a touch of the ball and were lucky to lose 3-0. Is that what you want to see just before the start of the season, Wolvesmod?

11 – I think you will find that Wolvesmod is referring to the season long loan which took Camara FROM Wolves TO celtic in 2004.
We were supposed to have a friendly as part of the deal, but it never materialised.

    10. I’d rather be a Southbank numptie and support the team than sit in the other stands and just whinge all season untill we went up. The majority of the support for the team comes from the south bank, yes we have our moaners, but we also have the only vocal support in the ground. During our wobble the support was fantastic coming from the SB, trying to push the team on, Plymouth at home I remember being a good example.

That aside it seems an interesting enough friendly, I wouldn’t want a massive european team because that suggests that we are just small fry, anyway with all these ‘pre-season tournaments’ knocking about I doubt they’ve got any time to play anyone else

    17 – Taffwolf,
you may well be right – I may well have the same age-related memory problem you refer to. – Anyway the main point was that the reference was to Camara being loaned out as opposed to a current loan in. Remind me on this one – Didn’t Jez manage to get about a £1m for the season long loan and then a good transfer fee the year later when Celtic didn’t want him?

Yes I think you are right, we ended up with Mulgrew as well I think – you may be approaching middle age, but I’m already there LOL.
Camara went on a season long loan for £1.5m and then when returned we sold him to Wihan for I think £3m -

I must say I’m a tad bit disappointed with this friendy, granted we cant play another premiership club however if MM wants a similar test match ready for the premier league whats wrong with either of the old firm? not only is it a good test agaist a great european team but it will attract a massive away following which will result a pre premiership atmosphere too.

15 – the majority of support comes from the southbank? Agreed it is the loudest stand having the most vocal people in a concentrated area but to say its louder than the other 3 stands if you put them together isnt true at all. What do you call support anyway?? People who pay and attend the games are supporting the teams cause……….. There are some numpties in all stands, i would agree with whoever says the ratio in the southbank is higher though. Seems to be the in place for teenagers who are hell bent on acting like idiots. Its not everyone of course, just some. I had a season ticket in the southbank for 12 years by the way…………I sit somewhere else now.

Can I make a suggestion to all those fans moaning about the lack of signings and our friendlies – go and support the Tesco’s. We are needing everybody to fight from the same corner next season. No whingeing at the manager, Moxey or Morgan. Let’s have an atmosphere at the Golden Palace to compete with Stoke.
Linked with Hesselink of Celtic – would be a good signing!

If the club charges a tenner on the door, considering the excitement in the air (people wanting to see the new signings etc) then they would probably be near filling the stadium.
My fear is the tickets will be over priced, resulting in a 12,000 crowd, a subsequently numb atmosphere of polite applause and nothing like what will await the week after. Oh well, only the first day that counts but I agree Celtic or Rangers would have brought some passion, a better test, a big following, and a big home crowd.

Not sure if Jan Vennegoor of Hesselink is the answer, he’s done OK in Scotland in one of the best teams but The Premiership is a world away from Scotland’s PL.
Regarding this friendly, I personally don’t go to them but as Grey Wolf said Since none of us have any idea who we asked (and who turned us down), it’s pretty pointless saying we should have done better.

I have all my confidence in the war chest at the moment, and proven, existing, premier experience seems to be the answer. Looking back to Championship and other leagues for players nope. Without existing premier experience, we might need a severe jolt of motivation. Maybe some sort of an electric chair before running on to the pitch.
