Fan will take it to the edge for fund
Friday 22nd May 2009, 11:30AM BST.
A football fan is visiting dozens of stadiums in a bid to raise funds for kidney patients at Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
Luke Corbet, aged 20, is aiming to run around as many football pitches as possible across the UK and will visit clubs as far afield as Arsenal in London, Rangers and Celtic in Glasgow, Swansea City and Middlesbrough.
Closer to home Luke will visit his beloved Villa Park for Sunday’s fixture against Newcastle, before heading to West Bromwich Albion, Wolverhampton Wanderers and Birmingham City.
He will run around the perimeter of these pitches in six days between Sunday and next Saturday. Luke, an assistant quantity surveyor from Sutton Coldfield, has organised his football odyssey in a bid to raise £10,000 to provide funds for Birmingham Children’s Hospital’s new renal unit.
Aston Villa season ticket holder Luke was born with chronic renal failure and is partially sighted – a condition which means he can only see straight through his left eye.
Luke, who lives in Sutton Coldfield, has already raised more than £3,000 and says the appeal means a great deal to him. He said he wanted to thank the hospital staff for their hard work.
He said: “I had a kidney operation in 1997 and came out of hospital in five days, when the usual time is six weeks – a very fast recovery.
“The staff at Birmingham Children’s Hospital do a fantastic job and the new renal unit will provide a more relaxed and modern atmosphere for care. It’s a great cause.”
Luke has been given a free rail pass from train company London Midland to get around all the stadiums.
London Midland commercial director Alex Hynes said: “I think Luke is doing a terrific job fundraising for Birmingham Children’s Hospital.
“London Midland serves many football stadiums and we often put on football ‘special’ trains so it’s great we could help.”
