The terms and conditions revolution will come one day
- Peter Rhodes
Friday 22nd May 2009, 11:16AM BST.
Albion will slash their squad by a third this summer – leaving manager Tony Mowbray with 20 senior players for his second assault on the Championship.
But chairman Jeremy Peace today insisted the Baggies will not sell their top stars at any price despite targeting a cut from 31 to 20 players.
Carl Hoefkens, Pele and Jared Hodgkiss will all be released at the end of the season as the club begin a summer of major ‘pruning’ designed to leave them with a ‘leaner and meaner’ group. Peace said: “We have ended this season with 31 including Jared and Craig Beattie out on loan and including the loan players who joined us in January.
“I can see us running with about 20 next season because we have the emergency loan market available to us next season.
“This number hasn’t just been plucked out of the air.
“We have looked at our utilisation of players, given injuries, over two Premier League campaigns and two Championship campaigns.
“In the Premier League, you probably need 22, and you need 20 in the Championship because you can use emergency loans.
“The last thing you want to do in the Championship is bring in a whole load of players in the summer and then find out that they are actually not good enough to take the team on.”
Peace’s policy will open mean a host of players leaving The Hawthorns this summer to cut back the size of the squad.
But the chairman has reinforced manager Mow-bray’s claim that the club’s top stars will be held to their contracts in the wake of relegation from the Premier League.
“We won’t be selling anyone, even if we get an ab-solutely outstanding offer,” said Peace.
“We won’t sell unless it’s a player who is peripheral and we get an opportunity to move him on, or if there are certain players who we feel we can improve upon by moving them on.
“What I don’t want to do is get rid of a load of players again and then find, if we’re lucky enough to get promoted again, that we have to bring that sort of player back at twice the price.”

Great news!
So often you’ve been able to look at the back of a programme and see we have more senior professionals than many clubs in the premiership, yet they are all professionals who aren’t good enough. Get rid of all these players on decent wages and free up some space for a few quality signings.
Bring on the Championship

anyone know the situation with the mowbray masks on sunday? are they available from outside the ground at blackburn or do we have to get them beforehand?

I believe they’re being given out at the turnstiles

Well done JP…free up some resource for TM and keep the quality.Makes good sense to me.

PROBABLE EXITS
Hoefkens, Pele, Donk, Cech, Moore, Beattie, Fortune, Hodgkiss, Mulumbu, Menseguez, Simpson
That leaves 20.
POSSIBLE EXITS
1 from Clement/Meite/Barnett, 1 from Valero/Morrison, 1 from Kim/Teixeira, Bednar
REMAINING SQUAD- Carson, Kiely, Daniels, Zuiverloon, Martis, Olsson, 2 from Clement/Meite/Barnett, Robinson, Greening, Koren, 1 from Valero/Morrison, Brunt, Dorrans, Miller, 1 from Kim/Teixeira
With a desire to sign Menseguez, Mulumbu and Fortune, that would be 19 without…..
……a reserve right back and reserve left back, only having 4 centre-backs and two recognised strikers if you include Fortune (or alternative signing).
I don’t want to be too cynical, but that doesn’t sound enough to me for 46 games, usually played Saturday-Wednesday-Saturday.
I hope this doesn’t cause conflict between JP and TM, but it sounds like we might be waving goodbye to either our loan signings, or some of that remaining squad list.
Quality? you have to pay to get that and its one thing our chairman won,t do,thats why we are heading back down.
He will expect TM to work wonders with a £50k defender ie Martis (you pays your money and takes your chance).
We have missed a great chance of being an established premiership side due to our penny pinching owner.Stoke invested in Beattie and he scored enough important goals to keep them up.

Does look like good business sense to me,but we still need the quality to compete, even in the Champs. So yes,get rid of the squad players who are just taking up wages and space ,and who seem to be making up the numbers.Get in the 2-3 players who will give us the Prem. quality so sadley lacking this last season. There must be a few experienced old hands being let go by Prem clubs at the end of this season who can do a job for us.
10 – Exactly right, we spent a bit on players but he is too stingy 2 invest in players with bigger wages. I remember at the time Beattie was being mentioned, local media etc were saying he would not come because we would not pay wages and it was too much of a gamble. A gamble that payed off for Stoke! Mowbray, couple of weeks ago admitted he wished he had not have built a team with all same wages, and that in prem bigger earners are needed. Fair play cuz Peace wont admitt it! And I dont buy this, that signings like Beattie put our club in jeapordy in event of relegation. He left Sheffield not too long ago and their not exactly finding things tough and sliding down championship are they!!
Its pretty obvious the players that need 2 go and hopefuly we can get couple players in. Does anyone know how true it is that super Kev is coming back??
Typical!
We will achieve nothing until Peace is gone. This bloke doesn’t want us to succeed. He makes Scrooge look like Bob Geldof!
Go now and take Mowbray with you.
You might fool the “happy clappers” but we know Mowbray isn’t up to it.

15. Well said, spot on !!!

AS MUCH AS I AGREE WITH THE CHOPING AND CHANGING OF THE SQUAD CAN ANYBODY ANSWER A QUESTION FOR ME.
IF WE DO GET RID OF MOORE AND BEDNER WILL WE BE PLAYING MILLER ALONE UP FRONT OR WILL THE RESERVES COME TO OUR RESCUE AGAIN?
10, 14, 15, 16. Are you lads for real or Wolves fans? Or maybe you’re just stupid. If it was just as simple as opening your check book why are Boro and Newcastle on the verge of being relegated? Not only that, their respective business models are not set up for the Championship so they’re going to be forced to sell a number of players and will have no idea how to go about preparing for a long, tough season in the Championship.
JP is absolutely spot on…again. He’s the most astute Chairman in the country, that’s a fact. We’re in safe hands.
Selling Robinson to Bolton for £3.5m would be a great deal. He’s so not worth that much money, considering his crap defending probably cost us relegation.

16, 17, Who would be our new Chairman and Manager?

I’ve been looking through people I expect to leave from the current squad and they’re all defenders and strikers. The way I see it, we may have as many as 11 senior pro’s that are midfielders from a squad of 20 next season. Doesn’t make sense to me.
It’ll be another interesting Summer of wheeling and dealing in the transfer market I think with, no doubt, a few surprises along the way.

Keremy Peace is the best thing to happen at this club. We might lose a lot, but at least the football looks slick.
18 – Sorry if I have gave wrong impression of my comment, I was just as disappointed as u 2 read comments 15 & 16. I am 100% behind Mowbray still, unlike those and I do respect Peace for stabilizing our club, keepin it in good shape for years but u must admitt he does not show enough ambition that is the concencus amongst majority of fans. And my point about Beattie is true, he has pretty much kept Stoke up and yet his wages haven’t crippled Sheff utd and put them in any jeapordy whatsoever. They missed out on auto promotion & could well be takin our place after next week. This is after all our 4th crack at premiership, how many teams would give 4 that! How many chances do we want? Peace needs 2 show more ambition & take more of a gamble otherwise we will forever be a yo-yo team.
Anyone still no if Phillips is comin back?
25 sums up my point more. Thats right, Mowbray is the man! And if Peace wont invest with him as manager he never will!
27,Do you reckon anything has been discussed,i.e Phillips returning.I haven’t heard a thing. Do you think Mowbray would have him back anyway?
What is up with some of you lot. Sack peace sack TM and do what exactly. So stoke brought beattie and stayed up. He suits there style of play there is no assurance he would suit ours . And i would rather watch our type of football in the confrence that the dross Stoke turn out week in week out. Its a long term project and risking all the money and paying for it for years leeds style is not the answer. You guys cant have been follwing Albion long as the progress we have made season after season ( and i include this one in that ) is massive. Todays society makes me sick you want the world and you want it now. Have some faith

the amount of posts made on both sides of the fence here by people claiming to support wba or wolves when in reality they obviously support the other is amazing. There wont be a constructive discussion on any of our teams until the E&S brings in a proper registering system and enforces a policy that there is no posting under other peoples names. I fully expect people to post as me saying stupid things now but as I have stated before there is no gravity to any posts here anyway.
Oh and if anyone trusts JP with anything other than his own interests then theyre deluding themselves.

I almost was all the way with Exiled Baggie until he qualified it with his JP comment. Some clever bloke once said on here, “If you want to make a small fortune, start with a large fortune, then buy a football club”. If JP walked away from our club right now, knowing THERE IS NO ONE INTERESTED IN BUYING INTO IT, we should be up **** Creek without a paddle. He is a rich man because he knows what he’s doing with money. None of you OR ME have the faintest idea or we would be rich. No one stays poor or ‘comfortably off’ if they can avoid it. Stop bloody wailing and watch TM and JP next season with what they’ve learned this one.
Jeremy Peace never misses a chance to state his admiration and trust in Tony Mowbray. TM has publicly stated that he was totally behind the wage restriction that prevented us signing players like Beattie. They have both admitted that it was probably a mistake. There is no rift between these two and that is exactly how we need it to be.
This pruning of the squad is just what we need, we have the loan system to use this season and we also have young home grown players that may come into contention. The most important signings we need to make are a competant fitness/medical team. The main problem this season has been injuries to key players, our current fitness ‘expert’ appears to have been an unmitigated disaster. Fulham have had a great season but have enjoyed the luxury of using a very small number of players. As we’ve seen in the last month of the season, continuity makes a massive difference.
27 Dano.
Your question, ‘how many teams would give for that?’ Answer. Leeds, Notts Forest and Sheffield Wednesday to name three with bigger support than ours and who were in the prem 10 years ago when we were languishing at the wrong end of Div 1. Norwich, Charlton and Southampton are another three that spring to mind as clubs with similar support to ours. Bradford, Barnsley the list goes on of clubs that lived the dream, your dream for two minutes before coming down to earth with a bump. There is no magic wand to wave, it’s down to hard work and graft, things that people don’t seem to understand in todays society. With nods to Queen and 30 Baggie, ‘I want it all and I want it now.’ There’s another phrase that comes to mind ‘easy come easy go.’

Obviously we must all bow to your greater wisdom but as JP owns most of the club and the most money is to made in the Premier League, surely the club’s best interests are the same as his own best interests. Unless you are privvy to some insider knowledge that eludes the rest of us. Is Laughing Wolf your accountant by any chance?

In the current climate, it is unlikely Peace will leave.
I don’t know who could replace him, but if there is some “Sugar Daddy” out there, I hope the first appointment they would make is to bring back Batson as Chief Exec or Chairman. Funny how Peace got rid of him isn’t it? A man who knew more than he did.
Manager? My preference is Martinez from Swansea. Hungry, young and done a fantastic job there. However if Peace, hadn’t treated Megson in the shameful way he did, we would have been an established Premiership club for a good few seasons now.
Ask yourself the best players of the last 10 years? Gera, Kanu & Greening. Who signed them? The only other one who comes close is Maresca.
I’m all for “pretty” football, but first you need to ensure you win the games to stay up.
Mowbray signings, on the whole have been shocking. The loan deals, diabolical. Selling the bloke who was a proven goalscorer and never replacing him, unforgiveable.
The last few games have been too little, too late.

29, santa :) I have only heard from word of mouth, was expecting 2 find something on here or on in some other news but its prob just a rumour. Not sure if Mowbray would have him back, I also heard he was actually offered the whole contract last year and that he turned it down rather than what was reported so who knows.
Back 2 Peace (30) maybe Beatties style wouldn’t of suited but I think he would still have scored enough 2 keep us up & 2 be honest, really would be ideal 2 get on end of Brunts crosses. The point is while Hull & Stoke are signing Bullard, Kitson & Beattie were signing with due respect Mulumbu! I am not sayin Peace out yet but if we were 2 go straight back up again I think the fans finally want some ambition because it just hasn’t worked so far. I mean c’mon it would be our 5th season?? Over what would be 8 years, hardly we want the world & we want it now is it

Interesting posts on here. The truth is that JP just WILL NOT invest. And if he won’t invest in Mowbray, then perhaps we have to accept our fate. This club will not move any further forward with this type of chairmanship. Granted we do not want a Ridsdale type of chaiman but the pro JP/TM brigade have to admit that this was THE pivotal season. It has been our worst Prem season yet and we should have been where Stoke are. Play the football we play but when it’s needed you have to Bolton/Stoke it out if you see what I mean. There is no backbone or steel in the team and that is down to the manager & chairman.

Tony Mowbray should get rid of the following:
MORRISON,MEITE,HODGKISS,BARNETT,BEDNAR,
MOORE,ROBINSON,BEATTIE,HOEFKENS,PELE,DO-HEON.

like this:

ZUIVERLOON/MARTIS/OLSSON/CECH/
VALERO/KOREN/GREENING/BRUNT/TEIXEIRA/MILLER.

I wouldnt say Mowbrays loan signings have been
diabolical,MENSEGUEZ,MULUMBU,and FORTUNE are
all class players, and I`d say Fortune is one of
the best strikers Albion have had for 20 years

If Tony had played them from the start of their
loan deals then ALBION would not have been
relegated.

Forgot 2 mention Dorrans & Clement in the squad, maybe we need 22 players then :)
I am sure real bully hoo is actually Jeremy Peace typing on here. Im only expressing my opinion (one that is the same as the majority of fans) aint that what blogs are about, but apparantley I am completley wrong! As well as most fans who are also wrong. 4 seasons to get it right and we still haven’t, yet JP cant do no wrong can he. Either that or he is a wolves fan as the name mite suggest. Pepping up clubs 2 be bigger than ours, fan support & fan base are 2 different things. We have got fans all over. Im sure we would have the support & get 30k or more given chance 2 establish & playing stylish, attacking football & with a goalscorer under the mighty Mowbray. That is of course if we had not reduced our capacity, another great idea of JP’s but no, he cant do any wrong can he?
Anyway never one to detract from subject of the blog, I am sure 1 or 2 players will go maybe Morrison which leaves space for Dorrans who I forgot 2 mention earlier. Storming championship next year oh yes!
