Wolves speedway star Tai Woffinden heads to tonight’s British Final with one ambition – and it isn’t to take the title.

Past winners includes such greats as Peter Craven, Michael Lee and Peter Collins.

But 18-year-old Woffinden’s eyes are on a prize without a trophy – the wild card slot in the British Grand Prix at Cardiff.

The coveted June 27 slot will go to the highest placed rider at Poole this evening other than current GP pair Scott Nicholls and Chris Harris.

Asked whether the attraction was the British crown or the glittering night in Wales, Woffinden was instant in his reply.

He said: “For me it’s Cardiff. I want to be at Cardiff more than anything.

“Obviously it would be good to win the British Final but everyone there will be giving it 110 per cent as well. Everyone wants to win it so we’ll just have to see how it goes.

“But it’s Cardiff. I’m going to do the GP qualifiers – I want to race those guys all the time. The English league doesn’t have as many top riders as it should have.

“I want to be at the top as quick as I can and then we’ll just have to see how long I can stay up there.

“Greg Hancock (former world champion) said to me the other day ‘The day I stop learning is the day I retire.’

“I spend a fair bit of time with Greg and listen to everything he says.

“I want to go out there and win – I’m not bothered who I’m against.

“They’re all there to be beaten and that’s what I try to do.”

Injured Wolves rider Joe Haines, who was due to ride in the event, has been replaced by Stoke’s Jason Bunyan.
