Wednesbury will welcome back the Matharu brothers for Saturday’s meeting with Penkridge looking to bounce back from the disappointment of a weekend washout.

Pindy and Bal Matharu will return after missing Saturday’s abandonned match with Hammerwich due to a family wedding.

Captain Craig Cartwright said: “It will be good to have them back. It will be another tough game against a good Penkridge side.

“We will have to be at our best to get anything.”

Rain put paid to Wednesbury’s hopes of beating Hammerwich, as they reached just 22-1 before the match was abandoned.

Hammerwich had made 151-7 in a match reduced to 40 overs, Waheed Hussain top-scoring with 47 with Wednesbury’s Neil Wyborn taking 2-14.

Although disappointed with the abandonment, Hammerwich captain Brian Fisher saw enough to suggest his batsmen can shine this season.

He said: “Our batsmen are not firing on all cylinders, but we’re still doing well enough and we’re working to improve.

“Last season I scored 750 runs batting at number nine so we’ve got a really strong battling line up.”

But Fisher recognises his side, who travel to Beacon on Saturday, need to keep scoring the runs to avoid a struggle.

He said: “It’s going to be a tight year. One or two wins against the right clubs will put you up there.

“One or two defeats against the same clubs will see you in a dogfight at the bottom of the league.”
