Gilmartin urged to stay with Saddlers

gilmartin.jpgMick Kearns has urged Rene Gilmartin to sign a new deal at Walsall and insists the Banks’s Stadium is the best place for the shot-stopper.

Goalkeeping coach Kearns has overseen Gilmartin’s development Chris Hutchings arrived as manager in January and believes the 21-year-old can challenge Clayton Ince for the No 1 spot.

The Irishman and rival Ince are both considering contract offers from the Saddlers and Kearns will appeal to Gilmartin to stay.

The goalkeeping coach said: “If it was halfway through the season and he wasn’t getting a look-in, I would say maybe he would be better off going out on loan and getting games at a good standard, but in pre-season, where it’s all starting, he’s better off here.

“He’s a big lad, has everything going for him and is desperate for first-team games.

“That’s where he’s going to come on. I can coach him, but he’s going to learn far more in matches.”

Gilmartin made 11 appearances as Ince’s understudy last season and Kearns believes he is now in a better position to challenge the Trinidad and Tobago international.

He said: “I’m hopeful both will sign again, but I expect Clayton to be put under a lot more pressure by Rene.

“I don’t want him to regard himself as a reserve team goalkeeper.”

Sorry Mick, but can’t agree more with wacca. Don’t forget, he came out in the press only a few weeks ago saying that if he didn’t get more 1st team action – he’s off.

gilmartin is no worse than some of the dodgey keepers that we have had in between jimmy and clayton.but i would like to see the club give clayton a 2 year contract.

All 3 of you are wrong!

Gilmartin has every chance of becoming a more than useful keeper for us – if the boo boys decide NOT to make him their next young target to destroy. What do you expect at Walsall, Perfection? All of our players are going to have some deficincies.

I just can’t see the sense in giving Ince a 2 year deal. He’s already showing signs of losing his powers so why tie ourselves to 2 years?

tinned , sorry can’t agree with you ! ince is the best keeper we’ve had since walker, yes he has the odd hiccup but by and large he is very consistent , one of the best keepers in this league and is still good enough and shows enough ability for a 2 year contract and i think we will regret it if we let him go !!

Gilmartin had a shocker near the end of season when he let the one through his legs but he also had some decent performances.her could well improve into a sound keeper. Clayton is not perfect but he has won us more points than he lost.If we dont give him 2 years I bet someone else will.
