Kidderminster midfielder Andy Ferrell has become the latest victim of the club’s player cull after being allowed to join York.

The Geordie enforcer becomes the 10th player to be given his cards at Aggborough this summer, with eight set to be released at the end of this month and skipper Mark Creighton sold to Oxford.

Ferrell had a year left on his deal after triggering an appearance clause in 2008/09, but agreed to leave to ease the financial burden at the Blue Square Premier club, where he has spent two years since signing from Hereford.

The 25-year-old had already seen his close friends Martin Brittain and goalkeeper Adam Bartlett told they were free to go – the three all shared a house together as Harriers players.

So he has signed for league rivals York, closer to his hometown of Newcastle.

And ‘Fez’ is not surprised to be on the move.

He said: “With the financial situation at the club, the gaffer told me that he wouldn’t stand in my way if I wanted to move on. They just wanted me off the wage bill.

“When I was told that, I didn’t want to stay and be a burden, as the gaffer reckoned he could maybe get a couple of players in for what I was earning – so it was best that we went our separate ways.

“It all comes down to money, if that wasn’t an issue there’s no way Adam or Martin wouldn’t have new contracts – and I would be staying as well.”
