Hammerwich skipper Brian Fisher believes their batting strength can see them flourish in a tight league as they prepare to travel to leaders Beacon on Saturday.

Their game with Wednesbury was washed out on Saturday after they had made 151-7 in a match reduced to 40 overs.

Waheed Hussain top-scored with 47 and Wednesbury were 22-1 before the rain forced the teams off.

Although disappointed with the abandonment, Fisher saw enough to suggest his batsmen can shine this season.

He said: “Our batsmen are not firing on all cylinders, but we’re still doing well enough and we’re working to improve.

“Last season I scored 750 runs batting at number nine so we’ve got a really strong battling line up.”

But Fisher recognises his side need to keep scoring the runs to avoid a struggle.

He said: “It’s going to be a tight year. One or two wins against the right clubs will put you up there.

“One or two defeats against the same clubs will see you in a dogfight at the bottom of the league.”
