Albion blog: The Bitter End

Tuesday 19th May 2009, 9:10AM BST.

ALBION 17 DH 26Albion blogger Jarrod Hill ponders what might have been as reality sinks in that his side are relegated from the Premier League.

We all knew it was coming, but the way in which we lost on Sunday to Liverpool served to highlight our problems this season.

The lads played well and gave it their all and had our defender Shelton Martis not made that mistake, had the referee not been bloody awful – how many times have we said that this season – and had our strikers put their shooting boots on we would have probably won.

It only adds to my frustration that we have said the same on so many occasions this season. Should have won, played well enough but somehow lost.

It’s why I am so disappointed to have been relegated, because a large part of me still believes we are good enough to compete in the Premier League.

I know people say the table does not lie, but in our case it certainly doesn’t tell the whole story.

If next week was the start of the season I would be really confident of staying up, because our recent form has been good.

It’s a crying shame it took us three quarters of the season before we realised what our best formation was and the players required to make that formation work.

If only we had started the season with Marc Antoine Fortune, Juan Carlos Menseguez and Youssouf Mulumbu, if Mowbray had given Graham Dorrans his chance earlier, if we had dropped goalkeeper Scott Carson when his confidence was shot.

I know its all ifs, buts and maybes, but it’s true. I know I sound bitter when I say this, but the referees certainly haven’t helped this season either.

I am fed up of hearing people say it evens itself out across the course of the season, because it hasn’t for us and Sunday’s game was the perfect example.

The man in the middle must have been the only person in the country who did not think it was a penalty, it was so cast iron you could have made a bath out of it.

It would have meant the Liverpool player would have had to walk and if we had scored we would have been 1-1 against 10 men for the remainder of the game it is on these small margins that our success and ultimate failure has been decided this season.

I listened to a radio phone in later in the day and heard Liverpool fans praising the Albion faithful. I am proud to be a Baggies fan and always will be.

Sunday’s show of support was just typical of our boing boing army.

Let’s face it, it is never boring supporting the baggies. They can frustrate you until you turn red and punch the wall, or have you jumping for joy with a permanent smile on your face. It’s at times like this you have to focus on the good times ahead.

We now wait to see the fall out of our relegation, which players will stay and who will want to move on. I would like Fortune, Menseguez and Mulumbu to stay on but without being able to offer Premier League football we will have to see what happens.

The weekend storm surrounding striker Roman Bednar probably means he will be one of many who are made available for transfer and this summer could see quite a few changes.

As always it will be interesting, I just hope the summer flies by. Already I can’t wait for next season to begin, August seems such a long way off.

So now I suppose its time to dust off my golf clubs and put this season down to experience.

But I am always proud to be a Baggie.

I’m sorry, but again, absolute tosh. I watched the game & thought you were great for 30 minutes but ultimatley were deserved losers, funny how you haven’t mentioned how Gerrard went down for a stone wall penalty. As supporters, in circumstances such as yours, we tend to remember that which went against us more than what went for us, your ranting is pathetic. Stoke & Hull, two clubs, that in my eyes, are smaller than yourselves but they’ve coped just fine with the apparent referee bias. Your style of play has seriously deluded your faithful, because you play neat tippy tappy football from side to side, this seems to shadow the fact you are atrocious at the back & neither one of your forwards except Fortune, would make it into most upper-tier Championship sides. I’ve never known supporters in any given season to celebrate being mediocre as much as West Brom this season. Most teams could adapt your style of play at the expense of success. You’ve failed, for the third time in the Premier League & are making zero progress. I think it’s a disgrace that other Championship clubs have lost out to you, when they clearly would have shown more ambition and put up more of a fight to progress. COME ON WOLVES!

Well summed up jarrod. The Liverpool match captured our entire season in 90 frustrating, disappointing, heart warming and pride enducing minutes.

Yes we could (should) have scored 1 or 2 goals, yes we had a stone wll penalty turned down (again), yes we gave a top team a gift of a goal(again) – but the noise the albion fans were making after we went 2 down made you proud to be a baggie – and the support for the players and the manager at the end reflected what might have been – but is still to come….

I’ve always tried to remain positive about the team, the manager and our football – it was great to be joined by a few thousand more.

Sunday was the first time I had seen you lot play this season and feel this game summed up what I have read and heard about you this season.

Great in the middle third, infact Premier class but in other thirds very poor. I think Fortune in this game summed up what I heard about your season. Outside the box brilliant but once 18 yards away not much of a clue. Also why didnt someone tackle Kuyt?

Do you feel you missed Phillips? If he had of stayed he may of scored you 5 goals but these goals may have earnt you another 5 points!

I have read one comment this week that said you should of signed Beattie! I agree, but I also feel this transfer was done out the blue and under the radar of other managers. Had other managers known of Stoke’s bid a lot of teams would have been interested.

Best of luck in the Championship, you dont need me to tell you how hard it is! I hope you come back up, but only if we stay up! If we come down I want you to stay down as well! :D

1- I seem to remember plenty of “sack the board / manager / players” ect from Wolves when albion were playing you off the park under TM. You now seem to think wolves have found some magic formula to success when all you have done is get promoted when we were not there to humiliate you again.

I hope the wolves fans enjoy next season – but if you think your “style” of play is gonna hold up against the prem teams then you are in for a rude wake up call…..

For a team without major financial investment getting into the premier league IS progress – we had no automatic right to get promoted as often as we have – we achieve it by playing football and with the support of the loyalist fans in the midlands.

You talk as if Wolves have already cracked it – lets see how condesending you are if/when you are spanked week after week and find McCarthy has no idea how to change things.

This was not meant to be an anti wolves rant – but if you are gonna come on and post that type of rubbish then i reserve the right to reply.

4: In recent seasons, you’ve had our number, no doubt about it. But that’s hardly anything to measure overall success on, as we could counter argue by saying we’ve won the league with more points than you did preceding this season & are a vastly different looking side now. I still think you’ve got the better side by some distance at the moment, but over the summer, that will change, we’ll have to see how it shapes up. As for calling for our manager’s head at one point, I fail to see how most supporters wouldn’t have in the circumstances at the time, we had took a step back & were playing dire stuff, I’d rather call for the manager’s head than revel in mediocrity like you lot. Ok, so it worked out in the long run & most of us had to eat humble pie, but it doesn’t always work out that way.

Much as I hate to admit it Senor Bagnall above does have a (just one mind you) point – the refereeing isn’t as biased against us as we’d like to think.

Gerrard was fouled in the box by our best central defender – which would have been a second yellow and they’d have played against 10 for much longer than we would have.

If that’s not an example of decisions evening themselves out then I REALLY don’t know what is.

And in regards to us now being able to hold our own in the Premiership – I’m yet to be convinced.

Hull came right out of the blocks and got points on the board – and had some remarkable results along the way – including against the “Big 4″.

Am I right in thinking that we’ve only ever beaten one of them in all of our attempts?

And Stoke have done it all year (much as I hate to admit it). Two draws against Liverpool put our minus ‘whatever’ goal difference in the shade.

Stoke made the influential signings in January in Beattie and Etherington – having admitted they ballsed up in the Summer with a £4.8million record signing – ring any bells?

I’m confident about next season – but I’m under no disillusions that we’re by any means a ‘Premiership-ready’ side.

I would like to think though that we can keep up our record of never finishing bottom by beating Blackeye Rovers on Sunday.

1- You seem to criticise us for getting behind our team but if you’d shown that sort of support over the last 17 seasons, perhaps you’d have achieved automatic promotion long before you did.

You criticise our strikers Jason, but Roman Bednar scored 15 goals in 22 Championship games, I’m guessing that’s a similar/better ratio than any of your strikers this season. Also, Ishmael Miller scored nearly 20 goals in last year’s Championship, not good enough for most upper-tier Championship sides? Then why is our 5th choice striker Beattie in Sheffield United’s first team on loan?

Middlesbrough have a £12m striker upfront, Newcastle have Owen and Martins, Sunderland have £15m-rated Jones and formerly of Liverpool Cisse. We’ll see how your strikers get on.

I wish Wolves all the best and hope we have a 2010/11 Premiership Black Country derby to look forward to, but if you think you’ve mastered it because you’ve won the Championship, I think you’re in for a bit of a shock.

I seem to remember you and the rest of the Albion fans being very condesnding towards us this time last year and telling us how you play such good football you’ll stay up.
Now your saying the only reason we went up is because you weren’t in the league. Well the points total that you won the championship with would only have got you in the playoffs this season. You were fortunate that it was a week year as far as the championship was concerned.

Last time we played wolves were a very young team which had just been thrown together, now there more experienced and have really gelled together, I think you would get a shock if you played us now!

I haven’t come on here to slate albion because I know wolves are in for a tough season and I think any wolves fan that thinks we’re easily going to stay up is in for a big wake up call!

However I think for people to say Albion should have stayed up and They have been unlucky is not the whole story. Yea Referees tend to be a bit biased towards the bigger clubs. But to be honest you can’t make the sort of errors that Albion have been been making in goal and in defence playing in the championship let alone in the prem. Alot of the goals they have conceded haven’t been because they have been out classed by prem teams it’s because they have made school boy errors week after week so you can’t expect to do that and stay in the premiership. Plus I’ve never seen a team get promoted to the premiership and have a worse strike force than when they were in the championship!

I hope mcCarthy has watched you games this year and has picked up a few tips. Good luck next year and hopefully we’ll have all the big midlands teams in the prem the year after!

Sadly attractive football alone doesn’t win matches if you don’t have a “cutting edge” and a sound defence. Worse, because you seem to dominate games you don’t win you feel hard done by.

It still stuns me that last year was considered (by ill informed individuals) to be a “weak” one for the Championship because the points required to win it was the lowest in x years.

Every season the total amount of points won is very similar (1494 this season and 1485 last) but the last year Leicester went down with 52 points and this year Norwich were 22nd with 46.

This year 12 teams accumulated 60 points or more – last year 13 did.

This year 14 teams ended with a negative goal difference – last year the amount was 12.

This year 3 teams ended with a goal difference of +20 or more – last year only 1 did.

This year 28 points separates the top relegation position to the bottom Play-Off place – last year it was just 18.

None of these FACTS point to the year we won the League being a ‘weak’ one – in actual fact they all point to this year being weaker that the last as the distribution of points is more skewed.

I’m sorry if this bursts the bubble of several people but at least you won’t be caught out spouting complete b*ll***s in the pub in future.

Supermaths… all your stats point to is that the top teams were better this year and the bottom teams were worse. And you have to ask your self why the bottom teams have got fewer points this year. It’s because the teams at the top have been alot better and more consistant against the teams towards the bottom.

So your theory isn’t all that good, Altho I do think that next season Albion will get more points in the championship than they did last time so should come straight back up!

I hope we can bounce back next season, and that the players that have come in and made a difference will stay with us. I think there will be a lot of changes over the summer and i hope they’re for the best in the long run.

It’s really a shame that we aren’t staying up as with Villa, Wolves, Blues and Stoke there it would have made a great story for the midlands.

All the best to both the newbies as they try to maintain their new found Premier Status. To Stoke the second season is always harder that the first.

Hopefully next year i’ll get to see a few more games (as i can only go mid week). Let’s hope that we can bounce back first time.

Albion fans know where things went wrong, and no one is saying we didn’t deserve to be relegated – only that there are also positives to be taken from this season.

The idea that Wolves have become some kind of major force to be reckoned with in the last season is laughable – but I do wish the majority of fans all the best for the coming seasson.

The title of this blogg was “bitter end” which is wrong as no one was bitter on saturday.

Im sorry but I really dont see how we are overreacting about biassed refs. The foul on Gerrard was not a foul! The ball was on the way out of play, gerrard tried 2 keep it in & keep his balance & hold off Olsson, but failed and when Olsson knudged him (bareley touched him) he went flying! He realized that Olsson had overpowered/got better of him & when he knew the ball was goin out anyway, he decided 2 dive! That thing happens all the time in box (it is not a foul)

As for refs I know they have been against us all season, I hate 2 sound like im complainin but it is true! Liverpool had every pretty much every decision. We had lost, we was relegated when our decent shout. Would of it of hurt 2 give it us what would of been(only our fourth pen since august!) Wigan, only decision we got was pen, Tottenham (Rob Styles) nuff said! Go back every week and there has been controversy. I’ve seen Stoke & Hull games on tv and this is not quite the case with them. Plus the media have been on our back, writin us off from the moment we was in bottom three prob cuz of our yo-yo nature. They think its West Brom in bottom 3 again, they will go down again! The points total next season will be interesting if nothing else:

The possibility of Newcastle and/or Middlesborough and/or Sunderland in the league from one end, and Leicester and Peterborough coming in from the other certainly increases the ability to spend money within the league.

And to be honest, not a lot has been lost from either end – especially if Burnley do it.

I would like to defend Jason Bagnall and one or two of the other Wulfies on here. Jason is guilty of believing what he reads, hears and sees in our wonderfully unbiased media. The commentaries tend to veer towards the Lord Haw Haw broadcasts that Cyril will remember from WWII. If you tell people enough times that the big four enjoy Papal infallibility, they will eventually believe it. Chaza and Merridale seem to have a less biased viewpoint and as such deserve to be listened to, what they say may not make comfortable reading but that doesn’t make it wrong. We never had a divine right to stay up, like Wolves we were a big club in the fifties and have been struggling to stay with the big boys ever since. Much as we may not like it, this means nothing to modern players, most of whom will join you for a combination of two things, wages and the prospect of winning things.
We are in danger of slipping into a summer of, my dad’s bigger than your dad, I’m as guilty as anyone in this respect but let’s have debate on the respective qualities and defects of our teams while not to falling into boring abuse and name calling. I cant agree with any of this bitter baiting by my fellow Wolves fans. I have to say it has been a pleasure at times to witness the Albion on the telly. They really did play great stuff. As for our Champions having it tougher than the previous year I have to agree with the Baggies fans it was almost as if no-one wanted to challenge us and some of the football played by clubs like Palace, Blackpool, Sheff Wed and others has been pretty dyer.
I would even go so far as say that we didn’t win the league, rather we were given it as no-one wanted to win games even when we played poorly. I know this is gonna infuriate other Wolves fans – but even they know its true. I have witnessed near paranoia in the stands when we have been loosing by the odd goal and even drawing games (not many I know).
But lets get real – Albion are the superior football team to us – but now we are in the Premier League maybe – just maybe we can stay in their slipstream and when meet they again hopefully given em a game.

deadly-why are you breaking your neck about the baggies being a better footballing side than us,this better football being unable to defend playing 1 up front at home and tippy tappy in the middle of the park? also have you watched them regularly enough to form that opinion

There is a lot of hypocrisy here. Yes us wolves fans have been impatient, but i think you forget how you lot were after mowbrays head just a few months after he got the job. IMO you have gone down because your manager was either too stubborn or too stupid to adapt your style of play. Playing the mowbray way got you relegated.

Wolves mite be in premiership now and Albion in championship, but 2 be honest. Albion are still, just like in the last few years a much better team, a better footballing side and if the 2 met now their would still be a gap and a comfortable baggies win! Before wolves start moaning as they do best, I admit this may change over the summer (and would need to if they stand any chance of stayin up) the 2 teams could be more evenly matched come august. But its obvious at moment. I wouldnt trade Kightly, Iwelumo etc etc for Menseguez, Koren, Brunt, Miller. No way!

    46) You are living in cuckoo land. The only part of the current Albion team better than what Wolves has got is central midfield. No one else would get in our current team . Fact.
You are in for a long hard slog next season!

To Jason Bagnall, don’t be blinded by statistics … Wolves accumulated more points than Albion in becoming Div2 champions, but the start to the season was incredible, after 20 games you couldn’t get a bet on Wolves winning the league … the second half of the season was not stuff of champions … serious investment is needed to give Wolves premiership survival hope. Based on recent form if no serious squad improvement is made MM will be lucky to beat the points total he took Sunderland down with (15?)

Over the season I’ve watched Wolves games whenever they’ve been on TV. They started superbly but teams soon adapted and in the end they were little better than the rest, scraping victories due mainly to the marginal superiority in one or two positions. That marginal superiority will be significant inferiority in the Premiership.

all i will say the prem will be a dull place without us in it,the plaudits from commentators even mr hanson,we have broken records and proved doubters wrong before and as the song goes we will do it again,i feel sorry for you bitching wolves fans ,if the papers are right ya gonna cherry pick some of our players ,what the same ones you have said aint good enuf for the top league?TAKE NOTE ALL OF YOU we are not far away from a team that will hold its own in the prem sunday against liverpool showed this,ok too little to late some say i dont ,it takes time and beleve me it will come,we are capeabel of building a side that wont cost millions it will be atractive to watch, entrtain and will score goals ,the style of 78 will be there again mowbray proved you could play the game in an ugly league of the championship and he will prove it will woprk in the prem and prove you dont need 20 and 100million pound players to play the game how wedid this season time will come when clubs wont have the money anyway to spend the millions ,albion will be the bench maark and proof that you can be the best without spending the millions to do it ,,so bitch all ya want wolves fans and some albion fans the good times am back at the albion and its round the corner

    (47) Knew this would happen. Im sure if u asked any neutral, they would say the same thing as me. Our entire midfield would take the places of ur players in ur team, Olsson, Robinson, Cech would also get in team. The only person I think would keep their place would be Blake and probably ur keeper. We are still the better side. If we played u now we would beat u! I just hope we meet in the cup next season so we can beat u again.

Thats a good idea actually, the managers should organize a pre-season “friendly” how about it??

Back on subject of the blog. BOING BOING!! Three points satday :)

Sunday and recent weeks haven’t been too little too late in my view, rather just too late. I think if the season had just 2 or 3 more games we would of stayed up. We was the in form team out of the bottom 5. Lets prove it with another win at Blackburn, Tony u said there is another away win left in the side. How about it?

50 – I agree, good times are still here. First Wembley, now relegation. This will be the last set back in our plans. Lookin forward to next season already!

41 – you mention my “childish rantings” followed immediately by ” we’re premier league now you’re fizzy pop” and “we’re better than you get used to it” …..

Having read your garbage for the past year or so I am no longer suprised by the depths of your stupidity – only amused by it.

    Please keep posting.

47 – if we are in for a hard slog, god only knows whats gonna happen to you lot – as for none of our players getting into your side.. Haaaaaaaaaaaaa

If your facts are correct can you explain why Wolves finished the season TOP of the current form league with 8 wins 1 draw & 1 defeat??

If I were you I’d be supporting my team to help them win on Sunday so that thy do not finish with less points than their arch rivals did when they were last in the prem & only spent a quarter of the money.

Check my facts if I were you!!!
