Wolves fight back to claim victory

Monday 18th May 2009, 6:56AM BST.

Karlsson_Barker_0080_JHWolves roared back from a 13-point deficit to take a stunning 47-45 victory over injury-hit Eastbourne.

Team manager Peter Adams had no doubt as to what swung it for his side – the early interval.

Most matches see a break after 11 of the 15 heats, but Eastbourne track supremo Bob Dugard prefers to carry out a complete regrade of the racing surface after nine races instead.

Adams said: “They have an early interval there and I think that was their undoing. It gave me a chance to refocus everybody and start sorting a few things out while there were plenty of races left.”

Wolves, with an early exclusion for skipper Peter Karlsson and a fall for teenage ace Tai Woffinden, were 30-17 adrift after eight races.

Although Fredrik Lindgren nailed the win with a double-point tactical ride in the last race before the break, Wolves were still 10 points behind and looked out of it.

But they have come on strong in the latter part of matches this season, and were helped on Saturday when the already short-handed Eagles lost No.1 Davey Watt to injury.

Wolves hauled themselves level with two races remaining, thanks to a Karl-sson/Lindgren 5-1 in heat 13.

When Cameron Woodward’s clutch failed at the line taking him into the tapes, the 15-metre penalty gave Adam Skornicki the chance he needed to win.

Even then there was drama. Karlsson and Lindgren looked set to take the three points needed for the win only for Lindgren to fall.

But Karlsson delivered the crucial victory.

Eastbourne: Lewis Bridger 15+1, Ricky Kling 10+2, Lukas Dryml 10, Cameron Woodward 5+2, Chris Schramm 3, Davey Watt 2.

Wolves: Fredrik Lindgren 12+2, Peter Karlsson 11, Ty Proctor 9+1, Tai Woffinden 8+1, Adam Skornicki 7+1, Hynek Stichauer 0.
