Pleck prospect ready for ABA final

Friday 8th May 2009, 8:00AM BST.

BOXER 1 SL 06Walsall heavyweight Christopher Keane will get the chance to become a national amateur champion in Sheffield tonight.

The 22-year-old has reached the ABA senior finals and is a step away from bringing the title to the Black Country.

With contenders in the weight division sparse to say the least in the professional ranks – the nearest is Birmingham prospect Neil Perkins – the 6ft 2in amateur is looking to conquer all before before him entering the paid ranks.

There is not much better a plaudit then to turn pro as a national amateur champion and Keane knows the battleground well, he won both his quarter-final and final in the City of Steel.

Now one more hurdle has to be overcome and the pride of Pleck Amateur Boxing Club is ready.

He said: “I can’t wait to fight, this is a huge fight for me. I have got lots of ambitions, but the first is to be a national amateur champion and this is my chance. It would be my greatest achievement, I could go on to box for my country and turn professional after that.

“I know Sheffield well, it has been lucky for me so far and lets hope I can continue that. I want to bring that title to Walsall.”
