A sandwich shop where a worker was filmed stuffing lettuce up his nose has closed its doors.

The Brownhills branch of Subway hit the headlines after Youtube footage showed Richard Shannon sticking lettuce in his nose and mouth before blowing it back out into food trays used for customers’ sandwiches.

Now his former workplace has shut down after the franchisee walked out following the impact the stunt had on business.

Nearby workers said they had stopped using Subway.

Rob Downes, aged 43, of R Downes Brownhills News-agents, in High Street, said: “The people I work with certainly stopped going there.

“This incident obviously would not have helped because everyone was talking about it and avoiding it afterwards.”

A spokesman for Subway said: “The store in Brownhills has unfortunately been temporarily closed.

“The franchisee has left the Subway chain following the incident that occurred at the store.”

The prank led to 22-year-old Shannon, of Castle Street, losing his job.

In court, he admitted contaminating or interfering with goods and was given a 12 month community order, and ordered to pay £60 costs and carry out 300 hours of unpaid work.
