67 staff shed at city firm

Friday 8th May 2009, 11:30AM BST.

Nearly 70 jobs have been lost at a Wolverhampton firm due to a drop in demand for its products, it emerged today.

Turner Powertrain, part of construction manufacturer Caterpillar’s advanced systems division, has made 33 employees redundant.

A further 34 employees opted for voluntary redundancy at the company in Racecourse Road, Dunstall.

Spokesman David Nixon said today all 67 workers left last Friday.

He said: “This is a result of worsening market conditions and the need to lower production volumes to take account of the much-reduced demand for Turner Powertrain’s products.

“The need for compulsory redundancies was minimised by fully investigating alternatives such as a reduced working week.

“These alternatives are the subject of ongoing consultation with employees.”
