Wardens ruin fans’ big day

Monday 4th May 2009, 11:30AM BST.

wd3294963ticketKilljoy traffic wardens descended on West Park during the Wolves promotion party – to slap tickets on supporters’ cars.

A team of five wardens was sent to the park, where they targeted at least 50 cars parked on the grass verge around the perimeter fence.

Wolverhampton Council was today accused of organising an “entrapment” of fans, bringing in thousands of pounds of revenue from the £70 tickets.

The cars were parked illegally, but were not blocking any roads. Around 5,000 people packed into West Park to watch a big screen presentation of the Championship trophy, and more than 28,000 were enjoying the game at Molineux.

Today Councillor Paddy Bradley, cabinet member for regeneration and transport, criticised the move. She described the authority as “naughty”, and said she would look into an amnesty for motorists affected.

She said: “Parking in the city is a big problem but yesterday, of all days, wardens could have been more sensitive to the occasion.”

The Tory councillor promised to look into whether the council put on more wardens than usual for a Sunday with an eye to a fines cash bonanza.

Wolves Supporters’ Club secretary Muriel Bates said: “I’m shocked. This was wrong and completely against the spirit of the day.”

Supporter Andy Griffiths, 43, of Pendeford, Wolverhampton, said: “It’s absolutely disgusting. This is a council-run event. They try and get as many people as possible here and then they ticket the cars.”

Since last April all revenue from parking tickets goes to the council. The £70 charge is reduced to £35 if paid within 14 days. The council was today unavailable for comment.

i understand residents may not like the paarking, if this is the case then yes block parking on residents side of the road – not both

up the one road by west park there is a school, on the left you can park “except on matchdays” why? i ask!

its alright people saying catch the bus in! i cant! i travel long distance! catch train in others say? im not going to pay 25quid every home game for travel!

Why has common sense left the world. Was the cars parked illegally — yes,was they blocking roads/driveways – no. If the council had not put on a screen in the park would the cars have been there? – no. did the council ask Travel WM to put on more buses instead of the one an hour(if youre lucky) sunday service – no. If prevention is better than cure then surely these parking officers, who we are told enforce tickets to “assist” keeping roads clear, would have been better employed before the cars were parked directing people to the nearest car parks etc. It amazes me how 5 of these people can be produced in an instant yet ask someone to be sent to cut the council grass, clear litter etc and you’ll wait a week.

Were the council trying to recoup the costs of ‘hosting’ the event in the first place? If so, they should have charged a nominal fee for the provision of screening the event. How short sighted of them to send out this kind of message when the city’s football team should generate so much income with visiting supporters next season. Ttruthfully, I think common sense should have prevailed. It was a day of celebration and think of the money that was coming in to the council from the event at the West Park. If it was a normal yearly event like the West Park show and people were parking illegally then fair enough however this was a day to cheer on our local team and the council seem to forget that they put on the event without publishing any warning that wardeens would be on duty & as for the Wardens. Jobsworths without any common sense or decency except to get glowing reports and a pat on the back when they ticket a few people. Still what goes around comes around and this might bite the council on the backside as people may be tempted to vote with their feet for other events thus losing them even more money as well as the councillors who could lose votes as I’d vote for any party that would scrap these little jobsworths! Then when they lose their jobs because they lacked common sense, they’ll look back at their actions on Sunday. Take note W-ton council, your digging your own grave!

Parking on verges is indeed illegal – however a quick look round many estates in Wolverhampton will show that it is widely tolerated. Indeed you will see many examples of cars (often untaxed) parked on pavements,
hindering access for wheelchair users etc.

The real issue here is that there is something deliberate and systematic about the issuing of tickets yesterday.

I happened upon these wardens just as they started to issue tickets. This was at about 1.25 pm, so clearly they have waited for the match (at The Molineux) to start.

They could, of course, have got to West Park much earlier and ticketed the first car to park on the grass verge and this would have been a visible deterrent to anyone else thinking of doing the same.

They quite clearly waited for their moment and pounced – how else can we explain so many traffic wardens by West Park on a Sunday.

These cars were causing no obstruction, and I suspect that a lot of people just followed suit upon seeing others parked there.

Anyone from the Council who tries to make out that this was not a pre-planned exercise is quite simply a liar.

Finally, can we look forward to the Council putting up signs warning of the penalties imposed on people parking on there in future?

Of course not – it’s their guaranteed little earner once a fortnight.

It just annoys me that this hasnt happened sooner – I lived in whitmore reans for years, and put up with fans and away fans illegal parking or not being able to park in my own street witout any parking attentdants in sight – I just hope this is a more regular occurance.

Fans shouldnt be above the law, just like everyone else who parks illegally they should get tickets!

I think blaming the council is ridiculous, the Wolverhampton wardens are notorious and have been under every council for the last 5-6 years.

If you go into town shopping and have a great day and get a ticket – it’s a shame that your day is ruined but you parked illegally, the same goes for any day out regardless of the “spirit”.

I wonder if they ticketed any disabled drivers?
If they did’nt then they are breaking the law, with there being no signs about parking AT ALL.

I can’t believe they organise an event without the proper marshalling involed for other peoples SAFETY more than anything.

Wolverhampton council,……..you have lost thousands of voters for this, and turning down the open topped bus parade on grounds of heath and safety is the tip of the iceburg.

presumably, when you purchased your home, you would have agreed to buy land and property as identified by the ‘boundaries’
Correct me if I am wrong, but the public highway in front of your property is just that – public, and therefore you do not have a god-given right to lay claim to it.
All car drivers ( well most anyway) pay car tax, and unless unlawful, have as much right to use and park on the public highway – including in front of your house.
This scenario is true for many people, who live in small villages or next to public houses etc.
Annoying, but I presume you knew that a football stadium was close and that the Park may be used for public events ?

yes, you are right. I knew exactly how close I was to the ground when I brought my home. I didn’t however envisage how many non residents would park outside my house on a day to day basis. Just because it is a public right of way doesn’t make it ‘right’ nor is it right that instead of giving us free resident permits the council is going to charge us for parking outside our own homes (and as you rightly said I pay road tax so I’m technically paying twice to park on the road) All because of the people who cant bear to find another mode of transport to the wolves game.
Although I cant bear the idea of having to pay road tax AND a fee to ensure I can leave my home in the car on match days and have somewhere to park when I get back, it makes me feel pleased that the selfish people who don’t care about parking outsides peoples houses might have that ‘right’ taken away from them.

Just to let all the wolves fans know who always park on the verge on west park.. this is not new.. the wardens were about taking pictures a couple of weeks ago during match time, so you may get a couple of fines through your letterboxes.

I was at the Mol on sunday and wondered why the Council Leader/representative had a quiet or even lack lustre ovation where others were Tumeltous .
Was it because people knew what was going on.

This is not the first time the slimey car park wardens have struck, I myself got ticketed on a side street where there is parking on a Boxing Day last year. I travel a 280 mile trip to come to the Wolves but the council still wants to rob the travelling fans!!!!

Look at it this way. They parked illegally and will have to pay 35 pounds. But they got uniformed security of their vehicles for the entire time they were parked. In crime riddled Wolvo I would call that a fanatstic deal. A smashed side window and a gaping hole in your dashboard where your cd/radio once lived would cost far more. Always look on the bright side.

    Calm Down – sometimes the E & S server goes on a go-slow.
So your gripe is not particularly with Wolves fans, as according to your first post of three, you didn’t expect the amount of daily parking outside your property that goes on.
Wolves fans have parked around West Park for decades – my first matches were in the late 60′s/70′s and my grandfather who took me always parked there.Unfortunately the facilities in the city in general, both for residents and visitors have not kept pace with the enormous increase in car ownership.
A lot of property owners have solved their own problems by turning their front gardens into ‘parking spaces’ – Some I have noticed even park illegally across public footpaths because they own more cars than their ‘drives’ can hold.
To suggest that Wolves fans ( being targetted again) should find an alternative method of transport shows a lack of understanding regarding the state of our public transport combined with the demographic profile of Wolves fans – you seem to assume that all Wolves fans live in and around the city – they don’t.
I am lucky enough to be able to use public transport on a Saturday ( also means I can have a drink without breaking the law), so I personally do not park anywhere near your house, but I am aware that other fans are not so lucky and in fact, I could not use public transport ( bus) for evening or Sunday matches because they just don’t run from my area at those times.
You still seem hung up that you somehow ‘own’ the piece of highway directly outside your house – you don’t, so you are not paying for it twice – just once with your ‘public’ car tax – you have chosen not to ‘purchase’ that space and that is your decision.

    LA Moe and other residents.
Just as an aside, something which you may not be aware of is that the club have invited fans to fill out a questionnaire regarding travel for home matches. I would hope that the survey results will be used in a positive way with the council to help resolve problems both for residents and travelling fans ( I know of families who travel from Yorkshire and the South Coast who park in the West Park area)
However I wouldn’t hold your breath, as it seems likely the council will only consider using short-term ‘money-spinning’ alternatives rather than a permanent long-term solution.
I would love to be proved wrong on this though.

It wasn’t just the Doncaster game where fans were issued tickets. Many fans -including myself- got slapped with a parking ticket at West Park on the day we played QPR (promotion day). These warden saddo’s were probably hiding in the park’s bushes waiting to ambush cars as we left for the game. There wasn’t a sign within 100 yds of where we parked (on the grass), so we’ve appealed against it. Unsurprisingly, we’ve yet to hear the decision…though they’re fast enough to book you, aint they? Everyone should appeal and make their voices heard.

What a great advert for a Premiership city (as someone said). Wolvo’s lost a LOT of parking in recent years with several car parks closing (or falling down!), yet the City Council do NOTHING about it. Meanwhile, Steve Morgan plans a greatly-expanded Molineux…so, where are we supposed to park? On the South Bank roof? Steve, if this is the pathetic “welcome” fans get when they enter Wolvo, perhaps you’d care to consider building a new stadium on the outskirts of the city? It may deprive city centre businesses of some welcome cash, but at least motorists may get some joy with purpose-built car parking facilities.

Wolverhampton City Council, you’re a disgrace. And you lot purport to represent the best interests of our City and its residents? Don’t make me laugh. You lot don’t deserve to have such a world-famous club like Wolves on your doorstep.

Regarding charging to park outside your own home, I agree it’s wrong but we pay Road Tax like everyone else so we put up with it. You said “Just because it is a public right of way doesn’t make it ‘right’”. Erm….wrong it’s the law. You pay your road tax, you can park where you like as long as you don’t block a drive. Before you even start to question my thoughts, my mother in law lives near New Cross & in the near future we’ll be living there and parking outside her house is horrendous with us parking 50 to even as far as 100 metres away. I too don’t like it but everybody who parks outside my mother in laws house has a valid payed up Road Tax disc entitling them to park where they want. It’s frustrating but there’s nothing you can do about it. You get traffic wardens we get naff all! At the end of the day these jobsworth’s could have used a little common sense and didn’t.

Good point 92. When they move the stadium out of the city centre and businesses complain to the council of lost revenue, they might have wished they never used the wardens. As I said was goes around comes around!

57, you idiot, the cars parked on the grass around West Park, protrude no further into the road that the ones parked in spaces, have a look at the photo. The parking spaces end at the curb and are the same length as the grass is wide around the park. GET A LIFE!
Wolverhampton used to be great, but now it’s a nightmare. I’d love to leave, but I love the Wolves.
