Hopes linger on Wolves parade

Monday 4th May 2009, 5:49PM BST.

wd3294906wolves-112-tt-03Wolverhampton’s council leader today insisted that an open-top parade to mark Wolves’ promotion could still become a reality.

Councillor Neville Patten said both club and council wanted a parade to take place this week.

He said talks were ongoing, with an announcement expected tomorrow.

Health and safety concerns, thought to include the several subways with large drops along the proposed route, need to be addressed.

But Councillor Neville said officials were hoping to work towards a solution, adding: “It is something both the club and the council want.

“We are still in negotations with the police who have raised some health and safety concerns about the proposed route.”

Discussions were held up over the weekend because of the bank holiday.

But it is hoped they may be able to make an announcement tomorrow, he added.

Tens of thousands of Wolves fans lined the route of a parade in 2003 following the club’s play-off victory against Sheffield United.

That event went off without problems, but police are concerned huge crowds this time could cause injuries.
