Wolves blog: Taking the Mick

Friday 1st May 2009, 9:15AM BST.

WOLVES 24 DH 1Wolves blogger Nathan Lloyd gives his own assessment on the fan Mick McCarthy got to grips with at Barnsley.

Whilst sitting and watching the FA Cup Final a couple of years ago in a bar on a lad’s weekend away, one of our gang Pete decided it would be hilarious to stick his finger in my ear.

My reaction was to recoil like someone had stuck a hot knitting needle in my lug ‘ole, so I turned round and delivered a punch of Herculean proportions to his shoulder.

It was a complete over-reaction to what was just a bit of tomfoolery and, of course, I was sincerely apologetic.

So although I can understand Mick’s initial shock at being grappled by an unidentified flying person at the end of the Barnsley game, once he had realised the fan was on his side, why did he continue with his grandad style fighting?

That one ridiculous scene at Oakwell, for me sums up Mick’s complete disrespect of Wolves fans and their opinions.

We often hear Mick describe Wolves fans as nuggets or numpties, but rarely as the greatest fans in the land or the 12th man.

Perhaps these are just over used footballing cliches, but Mick will need the fan’s onside more than ever next season as we try and overcome that tricky first Premier League season.

He could do himself a big favour and try harder in the pursuit to get the fans onside rather than continuing his one man crusade.

Anyway, now is probably the wrong time of the season to be getting bogged down in any negativity.

As a fellow Nathan said to me at work, this kind of success just doesn’t happen to Wolves.  To go into the final game of the season promoted with a chance to hit 90 points in the league is almost like a fairytale and an incredible achievement.

Of course it would be nice to go out on a high on Sunday, but all thoughts are now on next season and which personnel we could add to a squad arguably already stronger than our one and only venture into the Premiership in 2003.

I joked last time of a list of 50 potential targets I had drawn up, a joke missed by a couple of people.  I’m not quite that sad, well not quite.

Perhaps it is slightly obvious, but I think Wolves targets will be the best the Championship currently has to offer and those players already in the Premiership, but struggling to get into the starting XI.

I think Michael Mancienne is unfortunately a non-starter as in the summer he could find himself torn between the cultural metropolis of Madrid, shopping at Armani, Chanel and Versace – or the city of Wolverhampton with its glorious Mander Centre, which seems to be slowly metamorphosing into one giant pound shop.

The experience of Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia would probably be a useful acquisition, but at 35 years old and alongside Christophe Berra it would leave us woefullyexposed for pace.

The spine of the team will be where Mick will need to get it right.

I like the rumour of Steve Sidwell joining in the summer, but he will be on a good wage at Villa and we already know that although salaries on offer at Wolves will be the highest they have ever been, Steve Morgan and Jez Moxey won’t be venturing into silly territory.

If we want to avoid the fate of our Black Country neighbours, this season, I would have thought that Mr Morgan will need to invest at least £30million and offer wages at least on a par with some of the other top flight clubs in the bottom half.

Stoke may have wasted £10 million on signing Dave Kitson and Seyi Olofinjana, but they also spent another £20 million on successful transfers such as James Beattie, Matthew Etherington, Danny Higginbotham and Ibrahima Sonko.

They have taken a gamble and it at the moment it looks like it has paid off.

As demonstrated in the record breaking crossbar challenge on Soccer AM last Saturday, this current Wolves team appear to have a real bond and a fantastic team spirit.

So it will be essential in the summer to find that fine balance between injecting some new blood into the team to raise the quality, but not to the detriment of the fine team spirit.

I’m chuffed for our skipper Jody Craddock on his new contract, just reward for coming in towards the end of the season and shoring up a leaky defence.

I’m not keen on any of our loan players staying after Sunday and I’m sure there will be plenty more who will be waving at the stands for the last time come 3pm.

Second place in the league will be an interesting battle on Saturday. Birmingham had it in their grasp and then two fantastic Preston strikes put there promotion party on hold.

It was amazing to see that only a couple of hundred people had stayed behind at St Andrews to applaud the players on the end of season lap of honour.

Even at the conclusion of some of the most miserable seasons at Molineux, there were always a decent number who had stayed behind to say thank you to the players and staff.

Sunday will be a fantastic occasion.  The result is almost immaterial.  From the vibes I have from the fans, the Molineux pitch will not be ventured on for a second time and I don’t think anybody will dare mess with El McCarthy again!

Let’s hope we are saying a fond farewell to a Championship league and that we don’t have to revisit it for many years to come.

Have a cracking weekend.

No wonder Mick is wary of many so called ‘Wolves fans’. The abuse he took last year from those calling him ‘Muppet Mick’ and far worse – who couldn’t see what he building, was downright discraceful.

Most Wolves fans are. The idiots who sit round me have moaned all season and, as you rightly say, we’re Champions and 3 points off 90 points so I know who I think is right.

Am I the only one to think that McCarthy was lucky to be in a job at the end of last season?

Ok he’s managed to get us up, but more by luck than judgment with everyone around us performing even worse than we did.

MM needs to remember that it’s us ‘numpties’ that pay his frankly ridiculous wages. He treats the fans with contempt at times yet expects support unequivocal support. The overreaction to the Wolves fan at Barnsley was that laughable that it doesn’t deserve a comment.

He’s the most pig-headed, stubborn, arrogant guy in football, who continues to play his favourites and quite frankly got lucky this season.

His tactical ineptitude and arrogance will ultimately lead to his downfall, and I’ll take a bet with any Wolves fan that come Christmas, 85% of us will be screaming for his head.

Dear God, Lloyd. What planet are you on? I appreciate that Mick’s success is difficult for you to swallow, but you really are clutching at the most fragile of straws with this one. How on Earth can you blame the man for reacting as he did to being jumped on from behind? It’s not as if he’s universally popular with Wolves fans, is it? My only disappointment with his reaction was that he didn’t clock the idiot right around the mush.

It’s no wonder that Mick regards a portion of Wolves fans as ‘numpties’ if the fickle, inaccurate musings of this blog and your band of poorly educated followers is his barometer. That the E&S continue to give you column inches speaks volumes of their standards and agenda. You will be calling for Mick’s head the day after a defeat, and hailing him the day after a victory. You’re a tedious, reactionary cretin.

Great blog today and you are right in what you say about Mick and his treatment of the fans. I know he has done well and is on the crest of a wave following promotion, but i worry he doesnt have the name or the tactical know how to survive in the premiership and very few of the current side are good enough I am afraid. Sadly I think Wolves will come straight down as you dont have the manager that will attract the high calibre players – and getting the best from outside the premiership wont be good enough to survive.

Thank god someone finally said it. Mick McCarthy Always and i mean ALWAYS finds away to have a dig at the wolves fans. And not just the ”nugget” indivisuals…. as a whole!!!

Granted the ”fan” did aggresively grab McCarthy from behind,, but still McCarthy Over reacted.

And when asked about the Teams achievments this year he said,

” Weve had NO outside help this season. NONE its just the staff and the players”

Surely the 24,000 strong week in week out helped a little?

And sure we wanted him out when fings werent going well but what about when we lost 6-0 to southampton and we chanted super mick mccarthy? He didnt even praise us then.

In reference to the new Kits.

Theyve both grown on me over night and im quite fond of them now. Still think the home kits a little bit too orange and the away kits a little bit too walsallWHO.

Sorry Nathan, I’m with most of the others on this one. It was the “fan” that was in the wrong and should be lambasted here not Mick. Also, Mick has the absolute right to have little or no respect for some Wolves fans (not supporters). Respect is earned not a right and those (necessarily quiet now but who will no doubt return at some point next season to hurl insults in his direction and call for his head) who have done anything but support him or the team this season or last have surely not earned it. I’m not sure they should be called muppets or numpties but I can understand and indeed share the frustration. Supporters should support. We have a part to play and we have to both accept this responsibility and take it seriously. You are right to say that this is not the time for negativity, so, I ask, why write what you’ve written in the first place? Well done Mick and the boys and thank you.

Nathan the fantastic bond between players is largly due to Mick McCarthy you muppet. I think all your blogs this season have had some form of negtivity in them.

Finally, i’m not surprised McCarthy hasn’t called us the best fans in the land as many would think he has gone mad due to the fact were no where near the best in the land a lot of our fans are fickle end of.

Don’t you think he was not only pee’d off that he’d been assaulted but also by the fact that he could see swathes of fans all over the pitch intent on ‘having fun’, but in reality causing more aggravation to the Barnsley fans who were denied the chance to applaud their players off the pitch at the end of the game?

And as for the feckless few on these message boards earlier this week stating “no one can tell me what to do…you’re boring if you didn’t celebrate by going on the pitch…” you represent all that is wrong in today’s society. You have no sense of community and have no respect for anything other than your own point of view.

I read in one of the sunday rags, a quote from MM who said that the fan that jumped on him turned out to be a Barnsley fan who wanted to congratulate him – not sure if that reporter got the quote right or not. Anyway, MM deserves immense credit for getting us up as champs – fantastic job done. BUT- although I am not one of the numpties who wanted him out, I do have to agree that he does not seem to be able to warm to us fans, he does himself no favours in this regard and it’s a shame, ‘cos if the going gets tough next season (and it will) then the majority will be quicker to turn on him.

Firstly I think MM had every right to be startled by the idiot who jumped on him last week – he had no idea who he was or his intentions so my feeling is the idiot who jumped on him got off lightly – idiot.

Doesn’t matter who in manager at Wolves – the minute we get a couple of bad results the abuse will start – Hoddle, Taylor, Jones, McGhee are all decent managers and have all got the treatment. MM is no different and knows what he’s in for next seaosn by the idiots on here and elsewhere who have been forced to shut up for a few weeks. You know who you are and you know you’ll be back to the same old tune a few weeks into the new season. Sad but true and not real fans as fans support rather than abuse!

Nathan, McCarthy’s reaction to the fan who jumped on his back was quite natural – it could have been someone who hated his guts and wanted to do him an injury!
And regarding the fans being called ‘numpties’ etc, it is time to forgive and forget, wipe the slate clean and start as we all mean to go on.
We are Wolves fans through and through. We moan from time to time, who doesn’t but our support will never waver.
McCarthy in my opinion should from now on give credit to the fans for their support and in return we should give our 100% support to the team AND the manager.
Like him or loathe him, he (and the players of course) has given us what we have craved for all these years, promotion to the Premier League to play with the big boys and we must all join together and make this coming season a successful one by staying there more than 1 year.
Heres to Mick, the players and all at our wonderful club – Thanks guys for a fantastic season, good luck for the next one and let’s finish in style by beating Doncaster on Sunday!

Firstly Nathan you should get your facts right, if you watch the highlights on Sky’s Big League you can clearly see McCarthy shaking hands with that numpty fan who jumped on his back. So this blog has no foundation!

I suppose its any excuse to have a go at Super Mick.

Why would Mick lie and call our fans the greatest in the world, when only 3 months ago some were calling for his head, when we were top of the leagu!?

Sure, MM’s got us up – and fair play to him for doing that, but even the staunchest Wolves fan must admit he’s been very lucky this season?

I wouldn’t be wishing for Del Woppio to write the blog too quickly by the way, his tedious diatribe of Mick-love would soon hack everyone off, esp when the team starts getting battered next season.

You don’t get lucky over 46 games mate – you win the league by buying good players (no doubt MM’s done that!) – getting rid of the under performers (were you one of the “Freddy – Freddy” chanters??) and getting the team and tactics right. No amount of luck will get you the championship tied up with 3 games to go!

    Good blog Nate.
People need know the difference between giving Mick credit for what he has done, yet critizing what he hasnt done.
What he hasnt done is respecting those with a different opinion than himself.
Calling people who wanted him out names, having a go at people who pay huge money each year to watch Wolves, only to watch one disgraceful performance after another last season, much because our manager made some bizare choices.

Mick is a good manager, and I respect where he has taken us.
But Nates point is quite valid. Bad times will come again sometime, and thats why Mick needs to use this time of success to build up a good relationship, also with those people who disagree with him, or even think that he shouldnt be a manager.
Unfortunately judging from his 3 years so far, I am actually not sure he is able to do that.

    Nathan,

McCarthy’s on record for praising the majority of our fans. I don’t think he has ever insulted me, or any other supportive Wolves fan.

Yes, he insults a minority (just like Dave Jones did when he was in town with Cardiff). Those would be the same people who spew venomous insults at him – the ‘Mad Mick’, ‘Thick Mick’, ‘Muppet’ crowd – the same people who complain about ‘disrespect’ when it comes right back at them. Well, if you can’t take it – don’t dish it out.

Above all, don’t claim that he disrespects ‘the fans’. He doesn’t respect those who don’t respect him, that’s all – and since he’s the one with the achievements, I know whose side I’m on.

McCarthy has taken us from relegation fodder to promotion in 3 years. It’s magnificent, and we owe him respect and gratitude no matter where we go from here.

Maybe we’ll be relegated next year – maybe not. Either way no-one can take this away from us, and if I’m ever lucky enough to see the man in a bar, I’m going to want to buy him a drink (or three or four…).

Talking of real bond and team spirit, I was watching (again) a few of our goals this afternoon and I noticed several occasions when SEB scored following a pass from Jarvo and did not give him a glance afterwards; and whilst others came to congratulate SEB, Jarvo just stood watching. Do anyone have a clue if there is anything wrong between these two?
This is not quite the team spirit that people talks about.
On the exhuberent fan, if you read MM remarks, I believe that MM was more upset about fans invasion that prevented the players to parade than anything else. I do not think it was a gesture of disrespect to our fans.

Our form till Christmas deserved premiership football alone, and havent we been on a good run since the start of March. So our bad run last just 2 months, well oh deary me, how awful is that!

Wolferoo, I ask you this. When you go into work, do you put in 100% each day?? Well I don’t if I am honest, but I would say the Wolves players have this season, now, do you have bad days maybe even weeks in work. You know where things go wrong, the more you try, the more it seems to back fire……

well wasn’t that January and February for Wolves, just highlighted 100x more. It happens in football, teams don’t win all the time! Teams have bad patches, we probably wern’t even playing that bad, it was just everybody had raised the bar against us!

Wolves owe this season to no one, Wolves won this league, MM guided them and brought this squad to do it, so hey, give a bit of praise where its due like.

Lets not forget, we have seen off big spenders Birmingham, premiership quality of Reading and Sheff Utd. We didn’t just see them off in the end we totally went clear of them. How is that lucky??????????????????????????????????????

Nathan being the blogger at present is never going to please everyone

As for the amount of venom in some comments – it just beggars belief!

MM has “reacted” to what is a small minority of Wolves fans and alot of fans conveniently forget the frustrations of last season as easily as a hot knife glides through butter

An opinion is an opinion – right or wrong – I wish for once we could at least “voice” our opinions without the venom

MM is guilty of the following imv:

    1) Having his favourites and even if they perform badly persisting with them – something which will prove a major flaw in the Prem – as the Championship standards are not as good

2)Players being played out of position (understandable when injuiries occur) but not when players are fit – this has happened several times in the past

3)Re:Freddie – the wrong type of striker – why was he even bought??? – as it was proven that a Big man like Big Chris was what we needed???

4)Stearman wins a place in the Championship team of the season – yet he cant get a game for us??? Imv games to gel with Berra may have given us a central pair for the future???

    5) MM is talking of Prem youngsters on season long loans – What ever happened to Gibson from Man U – Alex Ferguson seems to rate him but not MM???

    6) Sam Vokes being rumoured to be sent out on loan next season to Sheff Wed – Is this lad not worth a place in the Prem squad if this is true??? I think so….

    7) Karl Henry – Is he a Prem player or a better than average Championship player???

S Ward, Keogh and even N Collins may have big hearts and put in a “shift” BUT not enough consistancy from them even in the Championship

MM staff and players have achieved the “3 year plan” Great – Super – Smashing

Yes lets all enjoy the promotion party BUT after the last party balloons burst and the effects of alcohol wear off – I for one hope that Wolves as a club “hit the ground running” in our quest to survive in the greed league
I also hope that MM buries his feelings towards the “minority” of Wolves fans

And I seem to remember a manager cuffing a fan on the pitch before. And he won the Europen Cup. I wonder if the Nottingham fans “blog” at the time said slated a 10 second incident before the achievements of 9 months. I doubt it. Mind you, Cloughy, like MM, wouldn’t have given a stuff anyway.

Absolutely spot on Nathan. Fans have a go at managers when things aren’t going well. That is the way of the world and it’s always been that way. Blues fans have been having a go at Alex McLeish all season, yet I haven’t once heard him have a go at the Birmingham fans. I think McLeish has a bit more class than McCarthy. It breaks my heart that I should feel this way after such a fantastic season, but the manager keeps trying his best to upset the very people who pay his wages and have supported the club through thick and thin. Anyway, let’s be optimistic and hope that he changes his ways next season.
