Albion Blog: Bomber’s Awards

Friday 1st May 2009, 9:10AM BST.

jarrodhilleoiruq.jpgThe red carpet has been unfurled and the wait is over – Albion blogger Jarrod Hill makes his choices for ‘Bomber’s Baggies Awards.’

As promised I have compiled my thoughts on which players deserve which accolades for their efforts this season, so here goes.

PLAYER OF THE SEASON

A straight fight between two players for me, Jonas Olsson and James Morrison. I have gone for Olsson, not just for his own performances but more importantly for the confidence that he brings to the whole team.

The whole defensive unit looks more confident when he plays and it is no coincidence that the few clean sheets we have kept have come with his appearances. I see him as a key player for our future.

YOUNG PLAYER OF THE SEASON

Graham Dorrans, his emergence this season has been one of few highlights.

GOAL OF THE SEASON

Ishmael Miller – remember him?-  and his thunderbolt against Blackburn. Although I also considered Chris Brunt’s free kick against Portsmouth.

MOST DISAPPOINTING PLAYER OF THE SEASON

Inny meany miny mo! No he is not our new Korean signing, just in reference to the multitude of players too pick from.

But I have plumped for Borja Valero, record signing and his impact has been non existent.

Too similar to our skipper Jonathan Greening to compliment our midfield and the money we spent on him could have been better invested.

Closely followed by goalkeeper Scott Carson, defender Abdoulaye Meite and Luke Moore.

MOST IMPROVED PLAYER OF THE SEASON

Chris Brunt. We all knew what his strengths were, but he has lacked consistency since arriving from Sheffield Wednesday.

Has gradually got better and better as the season has rolled on and his goal count of seven goals from midfield is impressive.

The fact a midfielder is our top goal scorer points a big fat finger at one of our major problems this season.

FUNNIEST MOMENT OF THE SEASON

The Chrissy Brunt song, and my stuttering attempt to diffuse my explanation of it to my seven year old nephew.

BEST AWAY FANS

Hull City and their hilarious “you’ve been mauled by the Tigers” song clinched it.

BEST TEAM PERFORMANCE OF THE SEASON

Sunderland at home, shame it came so late in the day.

FUNNIEST ALBION BLOGGER

Terry Insert This Week’s Pseudonym. Always makes me chuckle and lets face it, this season has been a grind and the laughter has helped.

Unfortunately my budget for the awards just about stretches to a Terry’s Chocolate Orange for you all to share.

Onto another subject, I have read with interest across this season many Albion fans berating Jeremy Peace. I accept he has his faults, but the main gripe seems to be the lack of transfer funds given to Tony Mowbray.

Personally I do not hold the same view, as far as I am aware he has made whatever funds we can afford available while not placing our club in financial jeopardy.

We are one of a few clubs in the top two divisions that do not have a wealthy chairman – comparatively speaking – and we can only spend what we can afford.

He has openly stated that he would welcome outside investment and sees it essential to us being able to compete in the top half of the Premier League.

I would also like to point out to all those fans who want us to “speculate to accumulate”, that – if Norwich fail to win this weekend – the three clubs relegated from the Championship in the Canaries, Charlton, and Southampton are all recent Premier League clubs.

Add to that list Leicester and Leeds and it highlights the pitfalls clubs face when gambling finances on future success.

Believe me I feel the frustration as much as the next fan, but having also witnessed the collapse of other clubs, I find myself tempering my desire for us to spend money we do not have.

Onto the game against Tottenham, a win might cause a tiny stir in my mind of an unbelievable Houdini style escape from relegation- and I mean tiny.

Anything else and all remains equal in my thoughts, but hey with Heurelho Gomes in the Spurs goal anything is possible.

You watch, he will probably play a blinder now.

Up the Baggies!

Excellent article on the youth set up in the Mail on the 29th . The staff responsible for the running of that also deserve recognition .Cyril Randle , regular of this page has commented on it ,and I completely agree with him . That is The Mail , not the the viles Brummy rag !

Couldn’t agree more with your comments. Overall it has been a pleasure watching the team play football and it deserves a better reqard. All is not lost yet and if we do get a result at Tottenham it will put even greater pressure on the other teams around us. Last Saturday we looked like a relaxed team who had accepted their fate and played for the honour of it. I hope we stay in touch for an interesting run in and if we do go down we are not bottom.
Just look at the teams who we could be down with. I don’t hear many people criticising their way of playing and they HAVE spent fortunes. Keep the faith with GP snd TM. We are not far away and certainly not bankrupt.

Interesting that all of the players in the “Most Disappointing Player” category were new signings for this season. A sure indication of how poorly the money we did have was invested…but some of those mentioned may well come good at a lower level…hopefully.
Totally agree with the award for TerryFunnisestAlbionBloggerBaggie….aye, boing, boing, Knighthood

I’ve just seen that Rob Styles is the ‘referee’ at our match tomorrow.

That’s us done for then…….how long until he pointlessly sends Robbo off this time?!

Good blogg as always, and totally agree with the comments about JP.

My other contender for most disappointing player is Bobby Koren. He aint been the worst player by a long way, but I personally thought he would really shine this season when he has often been strangely subdued.

I know he has played various positions, but i feel we needed players like Koren to play at their peak if we were to survive.

    Great Blogs all season.
Agree with most of your choices although i think Moore should get the biggest waste of space tag.
On the subject of Peace i whole heartedly agree. Even though it’s really frustrating to see us struggle to attract the right players and generally we end up buying players we’ve mostly never heard of. I would still rather we were run financially soundly that run into the ground. JP has been one of the most succesful chairmen we have had. He has re-organised the club, so we have a great set up, with good facilities, and we have a chance at the big time but no debts.

AF16 – I actually think he may send him off for shaking Keane’s hand too vigorously after they come out of the tunnel!!

Mainly agree with comments and agree with JP doing a good job as chairman. Lets hopw we can keep the nucleus of the side to get us back next season. Feel Kiely should be reinstated as first choice goalkeeper

Add Bradford City to you list.
8 years ago they were playing Premiership football. They spent a fortune on wages for people players like Petrescu, Collymore and Carbone, went into administration soon after being relegated and this year they couldn’t even make the play-offs in the fourth division.

I was going to spend 1-1/2 hours trying to find Spurs v Baggies on the computer, but Rob Styles as ref?? I’ll go and play with my electronics gadgets in the shed. With any luck I’ll electrocute myself. With Valero I think we should take on board he isn’t built for hard tackling and we should not expect that to be part of his game. If we had had that tough guy midfielder we needed maybe the chap could have shown his passing skills. At least he’s tried hard enough. What I find unforgiveable is to be gifted with incredible skills and not give a damn. There are two types of player to avoid in my view. The ones who fight in bars and get Police trouble such as Barton and the ones who sulk in a corner such as Moore. Ally skill to personality and we have a winner. Step up Mr. Dorrans!
