Wolves fighting to keep focus

Thursday 30th April 2009, 2:05PM BST.

WOLVES V IPSWICH 15 GD 10Wolves boss Mick McCarthy admits his Championship title winners are struggling to keep their edge and focus going into the last game of the season.

With promotion and the title won and Sunday’s opponents Doncaster in mid-table, there is nothing riding on the game.

The champions go into the match in a potentially distracting backdrop of the PFA awards dinners last Sunday and the club’s presentation at Telford International Centre.

But their curtain call will be played out before a sell-out crowd and the Championship trophy – last lifted by Billy Wright in 1959 – will await them.

Nevertheless, McCarthy admits it’s been difficult to lift his players this week.

He said: “It’s funny because all of the time we’ve had that hard edge and professionalism to us, because we want to win. It’s not the same at the moment and I miss that feeling.

“It’s that will-to-win and determination and it’s now just not the same. But I miss that feeling.

“It’s a bit of anti-climax at the moment, but I still prefer anti-climax to going into Sunday’s game knowing we need to win.”

McCarthy added: “It is difficult for them (players) to keep focused. The result on Sunday isn’t going to make a blind bit of difference to the fact we’re champions.

“We want to win it and we want to give out all those professional soundbites, but it’s flipping hard for all of them. Isn’t it nice that it doesn’t matter?”

After at least having the title to wrap up at Oakwell last Saturday, McCarthy admits the only incentive is to get the victory to finish on 90 points.

He said: “We want to win it and will do our level best to win it, because I want us to finish on 90 points.“

“That would be a great achievement and we want to go out on a high. But it is difficult to focus on it and there’s no hiding that fact it’s difficult to focus on it.

“Let’s just go and play the game on Sunday.

“Doncaster have got nothing to play for either, so there’ll just come and play and it will be a good football match.

“Everybody wants to win the game but I’m not sure it will tell us anything about anybody, no matter what the performance or result is like.

“We’ve done it, we’ve won the league with a game to spare, so I’m not that concerned.”

Although the season is effectively over, why should we just give any points to Doncaster?
The players MUST focus on the game, it is there to win and to achieve 90 points is the aim, nothing less!
Everyone wants to celebrate but let’s not finish the season with a draw or a defeat because either will cloud the magnificent achievements of all the players who have worn the gold and black this season.
Come on lads, focus on the win and let us finish in style – WE ARE THE CHAMPIONS after all!!!

    2) I totally agree. Would it not be nice to see players like Hemmmings and Vokes up front and Kyle Bennett in midfield. Give Stearman a go at centre half and if fit Little.
We could still get the desired win to take us to 90 points.
    Up the Wolves!
