Death plunge sparks Beatties car park plan
Thursday 30th April 2009, 11:30AM BST.
Beatties department store in Wolverhampton is to make changes to its multi-storey car park after a former carer killed himself by jumping from the 65ft-high building.
Sodhi Singh Khela committed suicide by throwing himself from the top of the car park, an inquest ruled yesterday.
The 35-year-old jumped from the same spot where Noel White, from Dunstall, flung himself and his five-year-old daughter Shanice to their deaths in 2004. Store owner House of Fraser said today it was “putting measures in place” to prevent further tragedies.
Spokeswoman Clotilde Gros said health and safety staff were taking the matter “very seriously”.
The changes will see the top two floors of the car park set aside for staff parking only. Electronic barriers will be installed, which can only be activated by staff. There will be no public access to stairwells leading to the top two floors of the building.
A three-day inquest on Mr Khela, of Myatt Avenue, Parkfields, finished yesterday, with the jury concluding that he committed suicide.
The Penn Hospital patient, who was suffering from severe depression, threw himself from level 11 on March 11, 2007. The inquest also heard how police resources had been stretched to the limit on the day, due to a football match at Molineux and a murder in Wednesfield.
Staff at Penn Hospital reported Mr Khela missing at 1.20pm but he jumped to his death at 2.50pm.
On July 14, 2004, 40-year-old Mr White pushed or threw his daughter Shanice from the top of Beatties before jumping from the building himself. The reasons behind Mr White’s actions remain a mystery.
