Neil Warnock has questioned Wolves’ credentials as title winners by claiming Sheffield United have the best squad in the Championship.

The controversial Crystal Palace boss, whose side play his former club on the final day of the season on Sunday, expected the third-placed Blades to have been promoted automatically already.

“I honestly did not think it would come down to this game as I thought Sheffield United would be up by now,” said Warnock.

“They have a better squad than Wolves so all credit to Mick McCarthy because his squad is not as good as Sheffield United’s.

“Kevin wouldn’t accept any favours, anyway, because he will believe – as I have done all season – that he has the best squad in the Championship and they should be going up automatically. I was hoping they would be up by now but it is not to be.”

Champions Wolves go into the final game eight points ahead of Sheffield United, having won four more games and scored 15 more goals than Kevin Blackwell’s side, who they have taken four points off.

United are just a point behind second-placed Birmingham, who go to fourth-placed Reading needing to win to avoid dropping into the play-offs.

And Warnock added: “If Sheffield United bring their best game to the table (on Sunday) then they will beat us.”
