Fans fly flag as season ends with party
Wednesday 29th April 2009, 11:30AM BST.
Wolves are appealing for volunteers to help the club pull off a memorable Molineux Flag Day at Sunday’s last match of the season.
The Championship champions are whipping up a party atmosphere to celebrate their triumph and have launched a campaign to get every fan at the Doncaster match waving specially-produced flags to create a never-to-be-forgotten image.
Thousands of commemorative gold and black flags have been produced, emblazoned with “We Shall Not Be Moved,” the song Wolves fans adopted in the late stages of the team’s promotion-clinching campaign, and “We are Premier League.”
There will be a bucket collection asking for a pound coin from supporters to help off-set costs, but what the club really need are volunteers to distribute the flags.
The club are looking for 50 or 60 willing hands and those who are recruited will be given a free ticket to Wolves’ final home pre-season game before the start of the Premier League campaign.
If supporters can’t wait until Sunday to get their flags, they will also be on sale at the club’s Molineux and Dudley Street shops from tomorrow morning.
Matt Grayson, Head of Marketing and Communications at Wolves, said: “We’ve worked closely with many fans on ideas to create a day to remember on the last game of the season. Fans are unanimous that they want to celebrate the team’s success by creating an awe-inspiring spectacle inside the stands, which will be the envy of clubs across the country.”
Anyone interested in volunteering can e-mail Paul King of Wolvesfans.org (paul.king@wolvesfans.org) to register their interest. Volunteers must be able to arrive at Molineux for 9.30am on Sunday and be available to sell flags up until kick-off – and may miss the first 15 or 20 minutes of the game.
Wolves have also announced a special 100 -page commemorative programme being produced for the last game of the season.
Talks to plan an open top bus parade to celebrate Wolves’ promotion to the Premier League will continue tomorrow.
Officials say discussions between the club, police and council chiefs have been “constructive” but that more time is needed to organise the event, which will attract thousands to the city centre.
The different bodies have been discussing how to organise a safe event, and the implications for closing roads. It is thought a parade could take place as soon as Sunday, after the final game of the season.
Tim Clark, spokesman for the city council, said today:”Discussions between ourselves, Wolves and other agencies are ongoing.”
