Kightly wants the title parade
Tuesday 28th April 2009, 10:36AM BST.
Wolves winger Michael Kightly believes the chance to parade the Championship trophy around Molineux will be a “once in a lifetime” opportunity.
Chief executive Jez Moxey has warned fans that any repeat of the pitch invasions that marred Saturday’s title-clinching 1-1 draw at Barnsley will mean the trophy won’t be presented in public.
Kightly wants the players to have the chance to enjoy the parade after Sunday’s final match against Doncaster, rather than have to scurry to their dressing rooms as they did at the weekend.
He said: “I hope it’s a great day, I hope we all get the chance to go around the pitch and salute the fans.
“I was probably one of those encouraging people to go on the pitch for the QPR game because I think the supporters deserved to enjoy the moment.
“It happened again at Barnsley, but I hope that’s it now and that we’re all able to enjoy it on Sunday.
“It will be great for the boys to be able to get their hands on the trophy and parade it around the pitch – it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.”
The wide man is looking forward to holding the famous trophy that was last in Wolves hands when lifted by Billy Wright in 1959.
He said: “There’s a lot of history associated with the trophy and the players are looking forward to Sunday.”
Saturday’s result means Wolves have won nine titles – the old Third Division (North) in 1923-24, the old Second Division (now Championship) in 1931-32, 1976-77 and 2008-09, the old First Division (now Premier League) in 1953-54, 1957-58 and 1958-59.
In the 1980′s, the club added the old Fourth Division (now League Two) in 87-88 and the old Third Division (now League One) in 88-89.
