Wolves boss admits Hyypia interest

Tuesday 28th April 2009, 11:35AM BST.

hyypiaWolves boss Mick McCarthy has confirmed his interest bringing Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia to Molineux.

Hyypia, 35, is available on a Bosman free transfer at the end of the season and offers exactly the type of experience McCarthy is seeking to stabilise his young guns as they enter the Premier League.

McCarthy said: “If Sami Hyypia was available and would consider coming to Wolves as a club who have just come up, then great.

“If Sami is on a Bosman and we could talk about it then of course I’d be interested. But he’s been linked with a quite a few clubs.”

Finnish defender Hyypia has made 461 appearances for the Reds – including 18 this season – and has won the Champions League, FA Cup and League Cup in 10 years at Anfield.

Hyypia has been offered a coaching role at Anfield, but is considering extending his playing career and Wolves are keen to offer him the chance.

But McCarthy is confident he will be given the funds to at least give Wolves a fighting chance of survival next season.

He said: “We’ve already started looking. We will get the support from Steve Morgan. I target the players and then chief executive Jez Moxey sees if we can get them to sign.

“Like every other club, we get reams of paperwork telling us of people who are available.”

Wolves have an obvious route to potential Anfield signings through owner-chairman Steve Morgan, whose close friend is legendary Reds goal machine Ian Rush.

McCarthy warned fans there will be no imminent transfer activity from the Premier League, with everything still to be decided.

He said: “We have the distinct advantage of being able to start now.

“But the play-offs don’t finish until May 25, the Premier League doesn’t finish until the 23rd and the FA Cup final is on the 30th.

“So I don’t think anything substantial will be done with the Premier League clubs until after then.”

As a Liverpool fan I’ll be gutted when Sami finally leaves, he’s one of the best defenders we’ve had, ever.

His main strength is that he reads the game so well, this is something you don’t lose with age, look at Maldini, he’s 40.

Its been a few years since Sami played week in, week out but he would be a great player for Wolves especially if they have/sign some young defenders who can learn from him.

Emlyn the last veteran defender we signed from Liverpool didn’t do so bad,did he? Especially when he lifted the Cup.To me Hypia and Mancienne would make a good combination. One good in the air and the other quick on the deck. What worries me is the comment that Mick identifies and Jez gets to see if we can sign them. My problem with Jez Moxey is that I think he believes the key to a good signing is in the price whereas I think it should be in the quality of the player, and that you should be prepared to pay a premium for the right players. We also need to move quickly before other clubs know their fate.

He’d be a brilliant signing for a year, but do you want to go back to trying to bring in players that are past their best to hopefully do a job, or stick with what’s served your club so well recently bringing in the ‘young and hungry’ players.

Hyypia is exactly the type of player WE need to help us consolidate our place in the Premiership.
Forget his age, it is his experience at Prem level that matters. He has played only 15 games this season but that is because of Liverpool’s squad system and amazingly, he has only been on the losing side once in those games!
Obviously he would not be a long-term signing but who cares if he does the job he is required for?
Signing up and coming Championship players will NOT keep us in the Prem but players such as Hyypia should be able to – and who would be complaining then, not many I would bet!

Did not take long for the doom merchants to come out, who come out with ‘if we don’t sign loads of £5-10m players we might as well not bother’ (Maltawolf). Also Mick is trying to point out that while initial discussions can go on with other clubs for players they won’t let them go until after the Premier League finishes at the very earliest. We are going to have to be patient. Finally I am not convinced about our Goalkeepers in the Prem and would love to get say Ben Foster on a season long loan.

I think Wolves must have been linked to an entire new squad by now. Hyypia is no spring chicken but to go just for ‘young and hungary’ will be suicidal. A man of his vast experience can only strengthen the side. It seems quite a few fans are assuming we are going to be able to spend with the big boys and we are not. Next season could be a long hard slog complete with relegation. Or it could be a fast learning curve for the young guns. Having players like Hyypia in the team will help the young lads with their transition to the Prem. Even if we only lasted a season there (but I think we will surprise some and comfortably stay up) the experience and overall progress of the team will be of great benefit and it is exciting times ahead at Molineux

Hyypia would be a good solid signing in my opinion. Most wolves fans realise that we are not going to be able to sign the very top names, its a simple fact. To me though, Hyypia is a big name for a club like Wolves, regardless of his age. Hes been there and done it and is still a class player with the type of experience needed. Whilst the ‘young and hungry’ policy has worked brilliantly for us, the premiership is a different kettle of fish, and we need some top class premier experience out there to accompany our talented young starlets.
Damien Duff would be a coup if we got him. Seems to have lost his way slightly over the last couple of years, but hes obviously got quality. Whether or not he’d drop to wolves wages from chelsea via toon wages i’m not sure. Hes bound to be a big earner, which could prove a major stumbling block. I doubt Moxey would commision the 50k + wages that he’d probably like to command.
A big relegated club (maybe?) like newcastle would be a good place to look for talent though.
Personally I think its a shame that Keane isnt looking to end his liverpool nightmare now rather than january gone. I doubt he’d leave spurs for us at present.

“lets all get behind MM the signings so far have been good so i cant see him bringing players in that wont be good for the club trust in the manager”

While I do think, we should back any players that Mick brings in, its certainly not truth that all his signings have been good. Here is a list of loans and buys, as I see them:

Bad: Darren Ward, Jason Shackell, Neill Collins, Kevin Kyle, Stephen Elliott, Freddy Eastwood, Charlie Mulgrew

Below average: Jay Bothroyd, Jamie Clapham, Darron Gibson, Craig Davies, Darren Potter, Nigel Quashie.

Average(som of these can end up as good or bad, but is still yet to be judged), Dave Jones, Cristophe Berra, George Elokobi, Michael Gray, Richard Stearman, Karl Henry, Stephen Ward, Kyel Reid, George Friend, David Edwards, Andy Keogh

Good: Michael Kightly, Ebanks-Blake, Foley, Vokes, McIndoe(he did do ok while for the short time he was with us, too bad he then joined a crap team), Chris Iwelumo, Jarvis, Gary Breen, Michael Mancienne.

Hyypia does not fit any of the criteria MM has adopted in the last three years:-
    1) He’s not British
    2) He’s not Irish
    3) He’s not young
    4) I doubt if he is hungry
Having said all that he is EXACTLY the type of experieced Prem player we need next season, which will be one of survival as we all realistically know. So what if he only has one season in him? His savvy at this level would be invaluable both when playing and training with the young guys, Stearman, Berra and Mancienne if we can get him. I spoke to a Liverpool fan today and he says some of the performances he has put in this year have been like a master class in defending.

When Arsenal won the title in 2001 they had a centre half pairing of Adams and Keown both aged 36. Its not all down to age its down to experiecne. Hyypia would be a greta signing IMHO

im not sure on hypia …
but on a bosman then maybe ?

good player but the whole scenario has a smell of the luzhnys about it (good player, top flight club, not getting a game)

would prefer the likes of wheater if boro go down

    P.S.
good call from laughingwolf on voronin … good player

BUT IF man city start splashing the cash wouldnt mind us dipping in for Bojinov (better than voronin imho), Onuhoa and Petrov maybe even Caicedo (as they have about 9 strikers currently)
    ….. well i can dream can i?

Did you really just include Gary Breen in the “good list”!!

and leave David Jones to the “average” list!

oh well, maybe you’ll get to actually watch Wolves play next year on Sky and make a proper call on the good and the average, cause you got them wrong!!

    Lets also look at:

You have added Dave Edwards and Karl Henry also to the Average list, ok so Karl Henry has played in all bar 5 games this season, we wouldn’t of done that carrying a bad egg for that long. Dave Edwards has been excellent the last few months of the season and his work rate is fantastic.
Lets not forget we signed Karl Henry for 250k and Dave Edwards for just over 600k, not bad signings for the price.

You also include Richard Stearman in the “average” list, the player has just made the best 11 for the season list in the whole division…..not quite that average me thinks.

You then add Jay Bothroyd to your “below average” list, well we got the lad on a free, he scored around 20 goals (yes could of done better) but did score against the Albion, then sold him for around 300k, not all bad!

Also Neill Collins in the “bad” list. Now I am not saying for 1 seconds Collins has been excellent, but he has contributed to more goals than any other defender over 3 years, played in around 15-20 games this season and is generally a Championship level player. We signed him for 150k, for the goals he has scored alone he has repaid that (lets not forget we signed Frankowski for 1.5mil and he didnt score once and actually played upfront!!)

81 – Agree with your comments re-Carstens gradings, but I think you missed one.
Michael Gray IMO was more than just an ‘average’ signing for us, in fact I think he may have been close to getting Player of the Year in the 2007/8 season.

I see a lot of the names being thrown around on here as potential signings we should look into and can’t help but thinking that some people have a very short memory.

Should we really be looking at bringing in players from recently relegated clubs, ie owen and duff as has been advocated on here? They have underperformed this year, they would be on far higher wages than the rest of the squad which could very much affect morale, and they are ‘has beens’ in the sense that they were once top players but are now average at best.

I am not interested in star names, just a continuation of the ‘young and hungry’ policy that has got us to the premier league in the first place. Only this time we probably have even more funds to aim even higher for unatainable young players like before.

I would very much like to see mancienne back at molineux as he fits this type-fit of player.

If Liverpool no longer want him then he is obviously past his sell by date , if we get him on a Bosman i don’t suppose there is any harm having him as cover on the bench as long as he is not looking for silly money as wages, thats if there is any truth in the mater, im sure a few more high profile names will be banded about before the next prem season kicks off.

Dublin Wolves. You can agree or disagree with my list. My point was that not all Micks signings where good.

When it comes to Breen, I do think he was a good signing based on what Mick could get at that time. He did do a good job, holding the defence together during that first season

Maybe “average” was a wrong choice of words because in my opinion it was just players who hadnt been “good” but could end up “good or bad” when we look back in a few years time. Maybe “almost good” had been a better choice of words then.

Name me a manager whose ALL signings were good???

Even Fergie, Benitez and Wenger get it wrong in the transfer market at times!
