Berra wants the best at Wolves

Tuesday 28th April 2009, 11:05AM BST.

WOLVES V CHARLTON 9 GD 14Wolves defender Christophe Berra has welcomed news of the club targeting top names as they prepare for life in the Premier League.

Berra is boss Mick McCarthy’s most expensive signing at £2.3m from Hearts.

But the Scotland international acknowledges that the club may have to spend bigger, as they look to strengthen their squad in the summer.

He said: “I’ve heard people say Wolves are bigger than a lot of clubs in the Premier League.

“We have to go up and compete. I don’t care who you are, you’ve got to spend money to compete in that league and hopefully we will bring in some top players to help us.

“We have a young team just now, we’re progressing and we can only get better.”

Wolves have an interest in Liverpool defender Sami Hyypia and have been linked with Newcastle winger Damien Duff and Manchester United’s young striker Fraizer Campbell.

Berra also admitted he wondered whether he’d made the right move, as Wolves’ slump continued when he first signed.

He said: “We went another four games without a win after I arrived and I was thinking: ‘Have I made the right decision?’”

“I had always said to my family before this move came about that if I got the chance to go to England I’d go.”

Berra insists he was right to move south to sample the Premier League rather than stay in Scotland.

He said: “There are lots of players in Scotland who move to the Old Firm. No disrespect to them, they play Champions League regularly which is the greatest club tournament in the world. But the best league in the world is the English Premier League.

“It has three teams in the Champions League semi-finals. If you want to test yourself, you’ve got to make that step and play against the best players in the world.”
