Baths battle makes waves

Tuesday 28th April 2009, 11:30AM BST.

BATHS TS 27Scores of protesters rallied on the steps of Dudley Council House in their fight to save Coseley’s condemned swimming baths, which could now close before August.

Campaigners waved placards at councillors arriving for last night’s full council meeting, while a protest website gathered pace with 2,500 hits to date.

The major protest followed the results of an opinion poll where every home in Coseley East ward received a hand-delivered note from campaigners asking if they supported the council’s plan to close the baths in Pear Tree Lane. Councillor Melvyn Mottram, who is helping to lead the campaign, handed over 1,100 slips at the meeting, with every single one rejecting the council’s plan.

Cabinet member Councillor Adrian Turner defended the decision to close the pool. He said: “If money had been spent on the roof by previous councils we would not be in a position where we were having this discussion.” The authority wants to close the baths on health and safety grounds.

Wonder if it would be cheaper to pull it down and rebuild?

Also if they got rid of the gangs of 60+ kids at night then more peeps would go there.

When will people learn that councils and councillors are there to be obeyed NOT listen to you. You only pay there inflated wages. The Councillors might sound interested at election time but really they have no power. So just go and lie down folks and let them walk all over because you won’t win. Honest

I Wonder if we would have the same outcome with the closing of the baths if we lived in a tory
controlled area – I dont think so

I think we probably would have the same outcome in a Tory controlled area. We would whatever the political party in power.

Despite what Labour councillors might claim, you would have the same outcome even if they were running Dudley because the money is simply not there to replace a baths that has already well outlived its thirty year lifespan.

If Dudley Council received the extra £60 million each year that Sandwell does, for instance, then perhap it could afford to build a replacement facility. Then again, even if it did what point would be served when Wolverhampton Council are about to build a brand new state-of-the-art leisure centre just up the road in Bilston?
