Albion set to hand Martis extra year
Tuesday 28th April 2009, 11:34AM BST.
Albion are poised to hand defender Shelton Martis an extra year at the Hawthorns.
Manager Tony Mowbray is set to activate the one-year option in Martis’s contract, after hailing the Dutchman’s progress in his first Premier League season.
Martis’s contract officially runs out this summer, but it contains an option for Albion to keep him for an extra season.
Mowbray is in no doubt that the Dutch Antilles international will stay.
He said: “It’s nothing that needs to be done urgently, but as far as I am concerned there is no decision to make other than saying we will pick up Shelton’s year’s option.
“He is a young footballer in terms of experience and the signs are there that that penny is dropping, that he understands the maturity required to play for our team.
“Shelton has all the attributes and assets you require to play in central defence.
“He looks composed with the ball, he is big and strong and fast and those things have never been a problem.
“When I first saw him playing for Darlington and took him to Scotland I could see all those attributes, but I feel he has needed to develop mentally over the piece.
“The signs are there for me that he is getting there and is becoming a tougher player.”

Well done Shelton, keep up the good work.

Everyone is saying how Valero and all the lightweight players are bein knocked off the ball …. Why don’t we just do a Portsmouth and put ALL the players on a MASSIVE WEIGHT TRAINING PROGRAMME …. then we’ll see a diffrence!

It just shows what players will do if they have to EARN their next contract doesn’t it?
Imagine where we’d be now if all our players were approaching the end of their contracts…..

Yes.
Keep him.
He’s NOT fast tho Tone!!
As far as Fortune is concerned, tell him how much you want him to stay and be part of a fantastic future with WBA, OTHERWISE he may just not realise how you rate him and want him to stay.
Get him sorted BEFORE anyone else gets to him!!

He also has the potential to become a very good holding midfielder. He is strong, got good stamina and a good passer of the ball.I think T.M should work on this during the summer.

Good move!
I think he’s gonna have a big season next term, has all the attributes and can pick a pass. Had a fantastic game against Stoke after the initial error for their opener, which Carson should have easily saved anyway, but he never let it affect his game and went on to be our best player that day with some strong challenges and sublime passes from out of defence.
