Sir Jack’s joy as team are champs

Monday 27th April 2009, 12:15PM BST.

WOLVES V BARNSLEY 2 GD 25Former owner Sir Jack Hayward picked the perfect moment to watch his first Wolves game of the year as the team clinched the Championship title at Barnsley.

Sir Jack was overwhelmed by the reception he received from Wolves fans as he arrived at Oakwell to watch Mick McCarthy’s team seal the club’s first championship for 20 years with a 1-1 draw against Barnsley.

“The greatest thing I have ever done was on August 9, 2007 when I sold the club to Steve Morgan for £10,” said Sir Jack. “I could not have passed it on to better hands. Steve is a great chairman and a great man and deserves this success along with the team he has around him – Jez Moxey, Richard Skirrow and of course Mick McCarthy.”

Sir Jack was invited to the final two games of the season by Morgan when he rang to congratulate his successor following the previous weekend’s promotion-clinching victory over QPR.

He had not seen the team in the flesh this year having embarked on a world cruise shortly after Christmas.

“I’ve been following the progress on the radio and via the Internet,” said Sir Jack.

“But I wouldn’’t have missed this for anything and I’m grateful to Steve for inviting me.

“I may not be involved day-to-day any more but the devotion never changes – I am still kicking every ball thousands of miles away.”
