Reid has eyes on Wolves deal

BARNSLEY V WOLVES 4 GD 25Kyel Reid wants his Championship title-clinching goal to be the start of what he hopes will be a permanent move to Wolves.

Half-time substitute Reid’s 85th minute equaliser and his first goal for the club sealed the Championship crown for Mick McCarthy’s squad in Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Barnsley.

McCarthy remains tight-lipped on the future of his loan players.

But 21-year-old Reid, who has a year left on his contract at West Ham and has played eight games for Wolves, would like to make his switch permanent to Molineux.

“That’s a question mark for me. It’s out of my hands,” said Reid.

“We’ll see what happens, but if the gaffer says he wants me to stay, I’m not going to say no. There have been some talks and this week we’ll sit down and see what happens.

“Will I come here permanently? There’s a possibility.

“Did the goal tip the balance? Most definitely.

“It’s always good to be involved and in the next two weeks we should know what’s happening.

“I go back to West Ham on May 3 after the Doncaster game but you never know what might happen.

“It would be nice to go on my holidays knowing that this is where I’ll be rather than wondering where I’ll be going next.

“I’ve enjoyed my time here – the boys have been brilliant, so have the gaffer and TC (assistant manager Terry Connor).”

Reid played 26 games on loan at Barnsley in 2006-07 and admits the goal meant his own celebrations were subdued, in contrast to the pitch invasion by Wolves fans sparked by his equaliser.

“I had mixed feelings really,” said Reid. “I went on loan to Barnsley from West Ham a couple of seasons ago and played 26 games for them, scoring two goals.

“So to come back was a great feeling for me because when I was there the fans showed me great support. And before I went on they gave me a round of applause, so when I scored I thought I wouldn’t celebrate too much, although I wanted to because it was the goal that clinched us the title.

“I was very pleased with that.”

Reid claims McCarthy have had a “massive” influence on him and have added another 10 per cent to his game.

“You could say he’s added another 10 per cent to my game,” he said.

“Before I came here, I spoke to him on the phone and he told me what he wanted from me,” he said.

“He’s helped my game play with regard to what to do on the pitch, when to pass it and my movement off the ball and my contribution to helping the team out defending as well as getting forward and getting involved in delivering setplays.

“He’s magnificent, unbelievable.

“You can see it (influence) in the boys and what they put into it for him. He’s a great manager and knows what he wants.

“He’s determined to get what he wants out of the players, he’s straightforward and straight to the point.”

“There’s no hiding, no beating around the bush. He lets you know what you need to do to improve your game.

“You need managers like that – not to ‘dig you out’ but to improve your game and he’s great at that.

“He motivates players as well.

“TC (Terry Connor, assistant manager) has played a big part too – he works with me on my crossing and shooting either before or after training with the rest of the boys.

“The whole staff has been very good with me and made me feel welcome.”

Reid is however set to miss out on a Championship winner’s medal after only figuring in eight games – he needs 11 appearances,

“You need 11 and I’m on eight,” he said.

“I’d be disappointed after that goal not to get one.

“I’ll probably have to take someone else’s if I don’t get one!

But the 21-year-old believes the trip to La Manga has been key to their recovery after chalking up seven wins, three draws and two defeats since the sunshine break in Spain.

“All around the training ground, people are buzzing and we’re just pleased the team has been flying,” he said

“We hit a rough patch but the week we had at La Manga helped us and we needed that team spirit back.

“Everyone knew what they needed to do then and we came back and kicked on again.”
