Talented youngsters from throughout the West Midlands took part in auditions for a summer production of Oliver!

More than 250 children lined up outside Birmingham’s Alexandra Theatre yesterday, hoping for roles on stage on August 26-29.

April Lunn, from Greenside Way, The Delves, Walsall, said: “I have been dancing since the age of seven and have been in some productions at school.

“I would love to get a part in Oliver!, whether it be a main part or in the chorus,” said the 12-year-old, who attends Joseph Leckie School and dances at the Livingston Dance Academy, in Wednesbury.

Friends Rebecca Ingram and Shannon Berridge, both 13, were also hoping to be successful.

Rebecca, a St Paul’s School for Girls pupil from Tibberton Close, Halesowen, said: “There are a lot of people here today all hoping for a part so it will be tough. I hope I can get through.”

Shannon, from Norman Road, Smethwick, who goes to Perryfields High School, added: “It would be just brilliant if we could both get through.

“We both love singing and dancing and to be on stage is just great.” Chelsea Little, 13, from Stourbridge, attends Kinver Operatic Society and Stourbridge Dance Academy.

She is almost a seasoned pro, having appeared in Annie, Sinbad the Sailor, Jack and The Beanstalk and Oliver!

The Redhill Secondary School pupil said: “I just love the thrill of being on the stage, it is so much fun. You also make lots of friends.”

The hopefuls danced and performed a solo for director Polly Ann Tanner and musical director Matthew Freeman.
