Injured players in boost for Villa

Monday 27th April 2009, 11:30AM BST.

Villa expect Gabby Agbonlahor and Nigel Reo-Coker to be fit for the visit of Hull a week today.

The pair were forced to sit out Saturday’s 1-1 draw at Bolton with respective hamstring and knee injuries but boss Martin O’Neill revealed neither are serious.

And he hopes to be able to call on both for the Bank Holiday clash with the Tigers at Villa Park.

“Nigel’s got a knee injury,” said O’Neill. “I don’t think it’s particularly serious, but he had a problem with it on Friday and it was best not to rush it through when we’ve got other people.

“Gabby was the same. He trained all week and wasn’t too bad but still felt a wee bit of a twinge with the hamstring so we thought we’d best leave it.

“With the extra couple of days next week in mind, I’m hoping he will be back and Nigel’s feeling a bit better too after his treatment.”

Right-back Luke Young also missed the Trotters trip with a foot problem and O’Neill will discover later this week whether he will be available.

Villa will host Hull still searching for an elusive victory after Saturday saw them stretch their winless streak to 12 games, leaving them 10 points adrift of fourth-placed Arsenal with just 12 to play for.

Bolton midfielder Tamir Cohen cancelled out newly-crowned PFA Young Player of the Year Ashley Young’s first goal in 2009 but the winger admitted his effort was intended as a cross.

“It was definitely a cross,” he said. “John didn’t get a touch on it but luckily that time it hit the post and went in. I was delighted.”
