Dudley boys go into battle at Civic
Friday 24th April 2009, 8:00AM BST.
Darren McDermott leads the trio of Dudley-based boxers into battle at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall tonight.
‘The Black Country Bodysnatcher’ takes on Jamie Ambler, as a warm up for his Commonwealth title shot against Darren Barker on May 23 at the Watford Coliseum.
Popular middleweight Jamie Ball and Jason Welborn, who returns to the ring after a two year absence, are also on the Sky-televised show.
‘Macca’ – already the English champion – competes just 29 days before another massive title fight.
But the middleweight, speaking from his weigh in at the Arrival Bar on Princess Street in Wolverhampton, insists it will be a help not a hindrance.
He said: “I need rounds, simple as that. But I want to send a message to Barker as well. I have heard him say that I am second-class, so lets see how second-class I am when I take Jamie apart and then come for him.”
Ball admits “he wants to catch the eye” in front of the cameras, as he takes on Matt Scriven hot on the heels of his first stoppage in the paid ranks – a three-round demolition of Arturs Selaus in February.
Welborn takes on Stourbridge’s Kevin McCauley in a Black Country derby at welterweight.
Tickets will be available on the door at the Civic for the show.
