Big crowds turn out to see Mercians
Friday 24th April 2009, 11:30AM BST.
Flags were flying proudly and crowds cheering wildly to salute the hero soldiers from the Mercian Regiment as they marched into Dudley.
Scores of townsfolk greeted the soldiers as they paraded through the crammed town centre. The Mayor of Dudley, Councillor Ray Burston, led a civic ceremony in front of Dudley Council house to honour the regiment.
Dudley’s young men were among those marching yesterday – with their proud families joining the throngs lining the streets.
The soldiers belong to The 3rd Battalion the Mercian Regiment, formerly the 1st Battalion the Staffordshire Regiment.
They are preparing to move to Fallingbostel, Germany during the summer before a possible deployment overseas next year.
Children from schools across the borough were also made part of the day by leading the troops through the streets to music played by the regiment’s own 40-piece band. It was a special occasion to walk through their home town on St George’s Day. Private Daniel Hill, 20, from the Priory Estate, Dudley, says it was more special for being the first time he paraded with his battalion. “I was a cadet before I joined the full army but to see the crowds that came out to support us was fantastic,” he said.
Sergeant Matthew Foster, 24, was watched in the crowd by 61-year-old father Alan, who said: “They are all men today and to see him among his fellow soldiers is really great.”

It’s great to see that people are willing to come out and show appreciation to those that put their lives on the line for us to enjoy the freedoms that are always bought at a high cost.
Well done Dudley.

Anything done on St George’s day for England is good.
In this case I know there are a lot of people in Dudley who are against the army and the police (same thing over here is France) and it is time to show that if you live in a country you are understood to agree with the opinions that prevail in that country and abide by its institutions. The British army-in this case an English part-is part of English heritage.
If I live in France I am supposed to agree with the big Paris parade on the 14th July and what their armed forces do.That is completely normal when I live in a country.
So well-done Dudley.
Apart from that I think everybody should now be campaigning actively for each UK country to have their own Bank holiday on their own saint’s day and then one bank holiday (eg the
Spring one) should be a grand Bank Holiday to remind everyone that the UK is (still) a happy united country.Like called United Kingdom Freedom Day.What does everyone think?
All this is important for national cohesion, because I hear far too much criticism eg on public transport about the army and the police. If they weren’t there who would do the job? Like hospitals, doctors, the fire brigade….
