Luckless Murray misses the boat again

Thursday 23rd April 2009, 3:34PM BST.

Matt Murray Wolves goalkeeper Matt Murray has missed the boat again with the promotion party, explains Tim Nash.

For most people, lounging in a Portuguese villa with the sun on your back with the family is the idea of bliss.

But timing, as they say, is everything.

Unfortunately for injured keeper Matt Murray, the giant No 1 went on holiday just as Wolves sealed promotion to the Premier League with Saturday’s 1-0 win against QPR.

As if being injured since November wasn’t bad enough, Murray, who returned from his week-long break today as he recovers from a ruptured patella tendon, missed all the celebrations too.

Instead, he was left watching the scenes unfold on TV 1,000 miles from the action.

He said: “The gaffer said I could have a break from rehab, as the likes of George Elokobi and Carl Ikeme have had previously.

“I just didn’t get the timing right as I thought it might take a little bit longer to clinch it (promotion).

“It’s just to freshen things up, as I’m going to be in most of the summer although I have been in the gym every day. I was sat in the villa and I was in watching it all unfold with my family on Sky Sports News.

“It was great to see news of Sylvan (Ebanks-Blake) getting the goal and then again when the full-time whistle went.

“A big cheer went up at both moments and then I got a few congratulations texts after the game, even though I don’t think I deserved them as I was only on the bench once.

“I saw the highlights on the Championship on the Sunday and it looked a great atmosphere.

“No disrespect to my family – and I had a great holiday – but I do wish I’d been there!

“I’m delighted for the lads, because they did what they had to do and fully deserved to clinch promotion.

“They’ve led the table for so long and have been the best team. When they did go through a sticky patch, they responded really well to produce some great results towards the end.”

Typically, Murray – one of the biggest personalities at the training ground – was soon back in communication with his team-mates as the dust settled on the news.

He said: “I sent the other keepers texts to congratulate them after the game. It’s a shame for Carl who came in and did well that he got injured.

“But, at the same time, Wayne has returned and also played a big part, keeping some crucial clean sheets towards the end.

“That’s what gives goalkeepers pride in their performance and it’s been important the team have been solid in recent weeks.”

Boss Mick McCarthy expressed his sympathy at Murray’s latest piece of bad luck.

But he revealed that the strength of the team spirit in the squad meant the luckless keeper didn’t stay out of the loop for long.

He said: “I think they get made to feel part of it as much as anyone else. I know what it’s like if you’re not playing.

“You don’t feel like joining in but it’s the way it is unfortunately. But Matt’s done all his work and he’s been resting for a while. He’s coming along fine.”

Dont work back Matt! Get yourself 100% right and then join the party next season. After all you are arguably the best keeper at the club aswell as one of the best keepers in the country. I think a run of games would be great for his confidence aswell as who knows, gatecrash the england which would not be difficult considering you got the likes of Frank “Scott” Carson getting picked!

Just get yourself fully fit Matt. Lose a bit of that weight too that’s giving your knees a lot of your problems. We’re really going to need you during the course of next season to really dominate the area, as although Wayne is a decent keeper, he’s still learning and the premiership may not be the perfect place to learn.Good Luck

Interesting. I see from the previous article on Elokobi that MM had said that Iwelumo should “rest and get himself ready for next season.” So they intend to keep him. Good. He has played his part and will provide strong back up to E-B and perhaps a new strike partner. I favour Scotland.

Glad to see no one has ruled out matt for next season because of his injury record. Him and hennessey will both be fighting for a place in the starting 11

    8. scotland is no better than ebanks or iwelumo, glad you agree though that iwelumo merits a role next season

Should have been there, one of Wolves best moments in years and he was on HOLIDAY!!!!
It winds me up that fans travel hundreds of miles for a Home game let alone an away one and some players book holidays in a period that is so important
Shows his commitment to the club.
It’s no good trying to tell me he will be training all summer, he is not 1st choice anymore and will be injured again come August.
    Time to get rid
He shoud try Stafford Rangers see if he will get mid-term holidays there.

Hennessey is a good keeper but lets be honest if Matt Murray is fit, he plays. He would take so much pressure off us from set pieces in the premiership. He is obsessed with the gym and weights and I think he is putting to much pressure on his knees and other joints. He has had similar injuries to rugby players I think they need to keep the weight down and repetitions up. He is my favourite player closely followed by George Elokobi and if I had the choice of any keeper in the prem or a fit matty murray big matty wins everytime.

Sorry Matt, I’m a huge fan of you as a footballer, and back before we had a decent training ground and you Joleon and George Ndah were recouperating at Healthland you were a lovely bloke too. BUT, to not wait 3 weeks for a holiday at such an important part of a very important season just doesn’t make sense.
You are still the best since Phil Parkes or Micky Stowell, but the truth is you are injury prone. It’s a shame bnut do yourself a favour. Get fit, then worry about football.
