Albion manager checks on Cox
Thursday 23rd April 2009, 11:37AM BST.
Albion manager Tony Mowbray has made personal checks on Swindon hitman Simon Cox as the Baggies start planning for next season.
Mowbray has been spotted twice at Swindon matches, with Albion among a glut of clubs keeping watch on the 28-goal striker.
But the prolific 21-year-old is just one name on a lengthy list of potential targets and the Baggies are likely to play a waiting game in the summer transfer market.
Hawthorns officials will ask fans to be patient, as Mowbray and his staff assess the market and gauge any interest in existing Baggies players before finalising their summer blueprint.
But Cox is likely to be discussed behind the scenes, after his starring role in helping the Robins avoid relegation from League One caught the eye of scouts from across the country.
The former Reading trainee has just one year left on his contract at the County Ground and, although the Robins are ready to open negotiations over a new deal, they might be forced to cash in this summer if Cox fails to agree terms.
The contract wrangle might drive down any transfer fee with Swindon officials, conscious they could lose out at a tribunal if the player runs down his contract.
Albion are likely to target a striker as they prepare for an assault on promotion next season.
The team have struggled for goals this season and will look to cut their losses this summer on £3million misfit Luke Moore.
That would at least create a vacancy in the forward line.

Has anyone ever seen him play? Also, I’m sure I’ve read somewhere that we’ve got another Jock striker on trial from Dunfermiline, or am I making that bit up?

Also, how long until Jim Magilton gets himself on the coaching staff at the Albion?

Can’t help thinking that Roy Keane at Ipswich with a Chairman wanting to prove his backing, will be looking for a goal scorer and he won’t be patient.

Thats the trouble with Albion, its always ‘lets wait and see’. We will be too late again, always leave everything to the last minute. If Mowbray has looked at him, and thinks he could do a job, sign him up, cant be any worse that Luke Moore. Look forward to seeing Ish back in the Blue and White also, we’ll never know if he could have kept us up, got injured just as he was getting to his best.

I love the last line of the article “That would at least create a vacancy in the forward line” as we have had vacancies in the forward line all year round due to opting to play one up front most of the season.
We will wait, someone else will buy Cox. He will play against us and score. Same old story!
