Why the Net has the advantage in the ‘Undies world’

Vauxhall’s lean green drive machine

So called ‘eco’ cars don’t have to be stripped of features and performance in order to boost their green credentials.
Nor do they have to be horrid to drive either. Take the five-door Ecoflex version of the popular Astra.
It actually has 10PS more power than the standard Astra 1.7 diesel – and a 0-62mph time of under 12 seconds is not too shabby for a green car.
But performance is not why people buy ‘eco’ cars – and this Astra comes with a number of modifications designed to boost fuel consumption and reduce CO2 emissions.
The engine management system has been tweaked to boost economy, the chassis has been lowered for better aerodynamics and the car comes with low rolling resistance tyres.
The most noticeable change, however, is probably the higher gearing: the engine can be fussy about what gear you select and you’ll rarely get into sixth unless you are on a dual carriageway or motorway.
But the extra power makes up for this and the car feels quicker than its 0-60mph time of 12 seconds would suggest.
It’s solid on the road and drives tidily, if not sportily. The Astra is now five years into its life cycle and there’s nothing radical about about its looks.
Inside, the cabin remains uncluttered and spacious – and of high enough quality to withstand the rigours of family life.
There are a few quirks about the controls: not everyone is going to like the indicators and tasks like changing radio band or checking fuel consumption could be accomplished more quickly.
There’s a decent level of legroom in the back and the boot was big enough to swallow a couple of cricket bags and a weekly shop.
The seats initially seemed a little flat and lacking in support but I managed a 140-mile journey without discomfort.
The ride is firm but not unduly harsh. The side mirrors are small, which means reduced visibility, but their size helps with the aerodynamics.
The Ecoflex should be good for upwards of 50mpg and, with CO2 emissions of 119g/km, annual road tax is just £35.
Its weaknesses are poor residual values compared with its competitors and its age: a new Astra is due to be launched later this year.
Which means that now could be a good time to seek a discount on the outgoing model.
