The Don gears up for Civic defence

Wednesday 22nd April 2009, 8:00AM BST.

6933005Commonwealth champion Don Broadhurst competes at the Wolverhampton Civic Hall for the first time aiming to send a message to British title holder Chris Edwards.

The Birmingham flier takes on Ghanian opponent Asamoah Wilson with the belt on the line, as a summer showdown for the mandatory challenger to Stoke’s Edwards remains in the works.

But first the 25-year-old competes at the Civic for the first time as the headline act, with the show to be broadcast on Sky Sports as their ‘Friday Night Fight.’

And the super-flyweight plans to seize the chance to show Edwards who he is messing with.

Broadhurst said: “I want to show at the Civic why I am a force to be reckoned with and why I am the man who is coming for the British title. With a big crowd and the Sky cameras there, this is the perfect chance to do that.

“It would be great if we can make that fight for the summer, but first I need to get through this. This is a big one for me, it’s my second defence and I certainly don’t want to lose.

“But these are the sort of tests I am all about.”

Broadhurst is not a complete stranger to the Civic, he has been spotted in the crowd before and is a known friend of British title contender Dean Harrison of Wolverhampton.

But now he will be the one under the bright lights, an experience the Commonwealth champion is relishing.

He said: “I haven’t boxed at the Civic but I know the place well, I have been to a few shows to see my mate Dean fight. It’s a great venue and I am really looking forward it. It will be a good atmosphere and I really can’t wait.

“I have fought all across Britain and to come to Wolverhampton is another great thing for me. I just want to compete, that is what I am about.”

The chief support bout is another fight with plenty at stake, as welterweights Telford’s Mark Lloyd and Swindon’s Jamie Cox slug it out in a British title eliminator.

Dudley’s Darren McDermott, Coseley’s Jamie Ball, Stafford’s Rob Hunt and West Bromwich’s former WBF champion Marcus Portman will also be in action.
