Bid for library move is revealed

Monday 20th April 2009, 7:59PM BST.

Walsall’s Central Library could be moved to the new multi-million pound Waterfront development, it was revealed today.

Regeneration officers want council bosses to give “full consideration” to the possible relocation from Lichfield Street, although the borough’s leader today said he would oppose any scheme.

The first phase of the Waterfront revamp will see the transformation of 17 acres of derelict wasteland around Town Wharf and the canalside into a ‘waterside quarter’.

Regeneration director Tim Johnson provides an update on the Waterfront scheme in papers set to go to Walsall Council’s cabinet this week.

But council leader John O’Hare said: “I see no problem with the library remaining in its place. There’s no point in moving it for the sake of it.”
