Ball aims to step it up at the Civic

Saturday 18th April 2009, 8:45AM BST.

BOXING 1 AE 15Coseley’s Jamie Ball aims to “step it up” and catch the eye in front of the Sky cameras at what will likely be a sold out Wolverhampton Civic Hall.

The popular light-middleweight is pitted against the vastly experienced Matt Scriven, a formidable foe with 61 fights to his name over 11 years as a professional boxer.

The 35-year-old has gone the distance with Curtis Woodhouse and Thomas Costello already in 2009, and his durability will be a test for the 24-year-old next Friday night.

But Ball showed he is starting to find his feet in the paid ranks with a three-round demolition of Latvian Arturs Selaus in February, his first win via stoppage.

Now he aims to attack Scriven on the front foot at the Civic, to raise the ire of his name in the boxing world.

He said: “Training has gone well and I feel that I have got stronger with each fight. Now it’s time to step it up, I want the sort of opponents that can help me up the rankings. This is my sixth fight now, I am not a new pro anymore.

“This is a great show to be a part of, so if I can put on a good show and get noticed, who knows what could happen? I feel the opponent I have been put against in Matt is a step up, he is a tough fighter and I will have my hands full.

“I will be ready for a tough fight at the Civic.”
