Albion blog: The Audit
Friday 17th April 2009, 9:10AM BST.
Albion blogger Jarrod Hill dons his headmaster’s hat and conducts a season-long audit of the playing squad – who will escape his wrath?
As we near the end of the season, I will give my thoughts on how I have viewed the individual performances of the players.
It means the blog is a bit longer than usual, but I will be interested to see how you have viewed certain players this season.
From the top: -
GOALKEEPER
Scott Carson
Young Scott has undoubted talent and at times this season I have witnessed him make unbelievable saves, but overall I have been disappointed with him.
He has made some absolute howlers and has cost us a number of goals and points.
The problem we have had is that Mowbray obviously has no confidence in his understudies, a number of times young Scott needed to be taken out of the firing line yet he has remained as a virtual ever present.
5/10
DEFENDERS: -
Carl Hoefkens
It is no secret that I have never been his biggest fan, he simply is not good enough to play at this level. His effort cannot be questioned and when called upon has given it his all, but not good enough.
3/10
Paul Robinson
Always gives 100% and that effort often gets him through. But when up against the type of quality the Premier League has he has often struggled, his biggest weakness has been cutting out crosses.
But offers support when going forward and does provide the team with some much needed grit.
6/10
Marek Cech
Bought as a potential replacement/cover for the left back and left midfield positions. Has been limited to a handful of appearances and, having played well when called upon, many fans are as baffled, as I am, as to how he has struggled to gain more opportunities in a side lacking inspiration.
Rumours of problems behind the scenes may be a contribution, but is it because he is frustrated at his lack of game time? Common consensus is that he will be moved on in the summer, shame we haven’t seen more of him.
6/10
Leon Barnett
Very poor season for Leon and he has looked completely out of his depth. Physically strong and competitive, but makes poor decisions and has been caught out on many occasions by watching a long ball sail over his head.
Still, he is young enough to learn but this season has been a baptism of fire.
3/10
Pele
Was used as emergency cover when our centre halves were dropping like flies. Came in and played reasonably well, a real ‘Steady Eddie.’
I have some sympathy for the guy. He plays well but never seems to get an opportunity to play the role we bought him for, as a holding midfielder.
6/10
Gianni Zuiverloon
Looked a world beater after his first half a dozen games, but his slip in form coincided with our barren run. His recent form has been better and with youth on his side he still remains a real prospect for the future.
This season’s experience will stand him in good stead, and if he can work on his positional sense will improve greatly.
7/10
Abdoulaye Meite
One of the biggest disappointments of the new summer signings. Has vast experience, particularly of the Premier League, but has been poor all season – when not injured.
His poor health may have been a big contributor to his form, but I cannot hide my disappointment in a player who I can only imagine is one of our biggest wage earners.
3/10
Shelton Martis
Having been bought for peanuts, we had seen nothing of the giant defender in an Albion shirt until he was thrown in against West Ham recently.
Unfortunately injury has prevented him having a run in the side, cannot knock him, based on his performances it is a shame he wasn’t given an opportunity earlier in the season.
7/10
Jonas Olsson
Outstanding, my personal choice for player of the season. His injury was a huge blow to our season, I cannot remember him having a bad game, often looks like he is our only defender.
We desperately need to hang onto him and I would be astonished if clubs do not come sniffing come the summer.
10/10
Ryan Donk
His age and lack of experience has meant he has been a bit of a Jekyll and Hyde player for us this season.
Again injury has no doubt been a contributor to his indifferent form, definitely one for the future, but with him currently being on loan his situation is unclear.
6/10
MIDFIELDERS: -
Robert Koren
Has suffered from being asked to play various roles within various formations. Yet he has still shown he is good enough to play at this level, another player whose services we will need to retain if we are to progress as a club.
7/10
Jonathan Greening
Has had an average season by his standards, another player who has suffered due to the lack of balance in the team.
Has been asked to play a number of roles, failed to develop a working partnership with Borja Valero and has been accused of not being attack-focused in a number of games.
I still rate ‘Jonno’ as a player in the right system with the right balance, but I would question whether he has the right personality or mindset to be our skipper?
6/10
Chris Brunt
Divides opinion among Baggie fans more than any other player. In my opinion he has been the player who has improved the most across the course of the season.
Seems to have visibly grown in confidence and if he can add more consistency to his performances, the young Northern Ireland international will become a hell of a player.
His contribution to the goal count cannot be under valued either.
7/10
Kim Do-Heon
Early season form was good, but due to injury and loss of form we have seen nothing more of him.
3/10
Graham Dorrans
Gets the ‘Surprise Package’ of the season award for me. Looked good in pre-season but was not expected to play at all this season.
Yet his performances in training and reserve fixtures forced manager Tony Mowbray to give the lad his chance and he grabbed it with both hands.
Looks a real talent and will have more of an opportunity next season to develop.
7/10
Filipe Texeira
Again injury has prevented him from fully competing for a regular place in the first XI. Has the talent and I can’t wait to see a fully fit ‘Tex’ terrorising defences again.
4/10
James Morrison
Ran Olsson very close for my ‘player of the season’ award. Has looked our main attacking threat all season, has scored goals and worked his socks off.
Another player we will have to fight to keep during the summer, having already received enquiries for his services.
Expect his name to appear in all the transfer gossip pages.
9/10
Borja Valero
Having broken our transfer record to sign him fans expectations were high, maybe too high. Too similar too Greening in my opinion for him to be effective.
His lack of experience of the English game and the £4.7million price tag weighing heavy on his shoulders has obviously affected his performance levels.
I would also suggest the lack of balance in our midfield as having a large bearing on his influence in games for us.
A good chance of him returning to Europe during the summer.
4/10
STRIKERS: -
Roman Bednar
Has surprisingly had his first team opportunities restricted in the second half of the season, although he remains our top goal scorer.
Has his limitations but has always caused defences problems with his willingness and work rate. I do feel sympathy for him, when having to watch other strikers in front of him in the pecking order play so poorly.
6/10
Ishmael Miller
Seemed to be finding his feet just at the time he got injured. What difference he would have made to our season we will never know, but his pace and raw power would have been a useful addition to our options.
6/10
Craig Beattie
If only we had signed his namesake James Beattie. Unconvincing at Championship level and was never going to be good enough in the top flight, but his commitment can never be questioned though I expect him to move on during the summer.
4/10
Luke Moore
Remains an enigma, has undoubted talent that we have seen on too few occasions. I hoped Mowbray would be able to nurture his talent and focus his attitude, but ultimately Luke has been a failed investment of £3million.
3/10
Jay Simpson
The on-loan striker from Arsenal has shown glimpses of an emerging talent, but we required a here and now player who could score the goals to keep us up.
If only he was as good as he thinks he is, another failed striker signing from Mowbray.
4/10
Marc Antoine Fortune
The lad has given us goals, effort, battle and a fighting spirit. I would like to see him come to us on a permanent basis as he offers diversity to our striking options. Has suffered in some games due to limited service, but given the right partner I believe he could become an excellent foil for a goal scorer.
8/10
OVERALL REPORT: -
I think my analysis highlights our struggle this season. Too many players have suffered from inconsistent form, injury, or a lack of opportunity.
Our striking options were too restricted at the start of the season and the balance of our midfield all wrong. Our new signings lacked Premier League experience and we have suffered from too many injuries to key players.
Players I would be desperate to hold onto would be Olsson, Morrison, Fortune, Koren, Greening and Dorrans.
Players I would hope we can move on to generate some transfer funds for strengthening would be Hoefkens, Barnett, Meite, Valero, Beattie and Moore.
Players I expect to see big improvements in next season include Carson, Zuiverloon, Brunt, and Dorrans.
All have youth on their side and with greater experience can improve quickly.

Hi Jarrod
Shame that your end of season report features so many below par performances. I’m doing a similar thing for an upcoming blog and there are a few with slightly higher scores, albeit because they have played against inferior opposition.
Good read though and I’m sure if you can keep hold of the likes of Zuiverloon, Greening, Morrison, Koren and get yourself scoring centre forward, you will bounce straight back up, thats if you don’t perform and end of season miracle!
I’m off work for the first 3 days of next week, so if you fancy grabbing an end of season drink let me know and I’ll pop into town.
Cheers, Nathan.

I’m with you most of the way, but reckon your sympathy and allegiance get the better of your judgement on some occasions – if Olsson is 10 out of 10, why are we bottom of the table?
I would love to agree with you, love to say he’s an excellent player, but the results betray the facts that I’m letting my heart rule my heart.
Ditto for Morrison, Koren, Greening and Carson.
I say clear the whole lot out, apart from Olsson, Martis, Zuiverloon, Dorrans and Morrison. Then start again. The name, the club, the supporters, the atmosphere and the prospect of promotion again should be enough to attract talent. Focus on the youth team. Focus on fashioning gems from rough cuts like Miller, Martis and Dorrans.
On the other hand, I much prefer The Championship. So much more relaxing, and I can get a seat at the games. Who wants to faff around at Old Trafford when you can get to Coventry so easily?
Can’t really disagree with much there Bomber.
I’d move Kim on in the Summer and keep Barnett personally, but that’s about it.
My most disappointing Summer signing has no doubt been Valero. You can see he could be class, but he just hasn’t done it at all.
We NEED to keep Carson, Zuvi, Olsson, Greening, Mozza, Koren, Dorrans, Bednar, Miller, Brunt (yes, that’s me saying we NEED to keep Brunt) and if at all possible sign Fortune permanently.
Anyone who’s going to be venturing to City on Sunday, if you fancy a pint or 2, we’re going to be in the Mary D’s pub on Grey Mare Lane from about 12pm. Hope to see you there.

I am not in a position to comment on your ratings Bomber but I simply wanted to thank you for all your posts this season. The work that you and Nathan do each week starts off the debates that we all love. I feel that the posts full of hate are becoming less and less and we are left with exactly what we want, loads of banter, loads of humour but respect for each other and our beloved teams.
Keep it up Bomber!

In total agreement sad to say a flop of a season, finding it hard to look forward at present. Here we are again.
First and foremost how are you neddy?!
The baggies need to sign some decent championship defenders who can mix it. Olsson and Morrison will be gone. I have suggested before that Carson has a clause in his contract to say if he is fit he must play, that is why his move to stoke fell through because pulis wouldnt give anybody any guarantees. Mowbrays comments have been disrespectful to the fans just recently, football is about getting results, it is a results orientated business, not how many passes you can complete on the halfway line before you lose it and the opposition score! I wouldnt get rid of him but if Curbishley wanted the job I would be tempted.
Cheers Malvern Wolf!
I have to say I have definitely noticed a decline in the ridiculous posts that were on Jarrod’s and my blog from last season.
There are still one or two numpties that write complete tosh just to get a reaction, but they seem to be few and far between.
I’ll be gutted if Albion do go down. Are we ever destined to have a top flight black country derby?

i left a west brom top on the gates of anfield this week in the memory of the 96 on behalf of all west brom fans,it was nice to see a wolves scarf hanging there too, boing boing

Hi Nathan, would love to meet up for a drink soon and im sure the E+S will sort something out.
Malvern thank you for your kind comments as ever.
I must admit this season has become somewhat of a grind and having to think of new ways to write pretty much the same blog week after week has at times been a little wearing.
Malvern and all Wolves fans must be over the moon with the way your season has gone. I would suggest you need to invest heavily to avoid our mistakes this season. My only suggestion would be to recruit players with Premier League experience and balance signing players with potential with players who will do a job here and now. Good luck.

3 ned, will see you in there if i can find it,aye boing boing hic hic

I agree most of the way, Carson has made some howlers but playing behind a defence like that and a midfield with no cover whatsoever what can you expect, also remember the stick Keily got last season also playing behind a poor defence. It would be interesting to see your audit marks for Mowbray & Peace?
Peace gave Mowbray a limited budget, but did Mowbray make the most of that budget ?
My short opinion of what is a long debate of our failure yet again is simple, Gera & Phillips were replaced by inferior players and we were heading for the Premiership.
That sums up Jeremy – FAILURE ON THE CHEAP AGAIN !!!
its also time to pick our goal of the season,A OR B. aye boing boing donk

Do you think that Olssen, Morrison and Fortune would be good for us – maybe on loan for a season?.You can have a few of our squad on loan too. Makes sense. Our guys have the qualities to get out of the Championship while your guys have the vital premiership experience which we desperately need.. the clubs should work together like this. A lot of teams crammed with premiership experience have floundered in the championship and especially foreigners. (Think Leeds, watford, Norwich, Charlton etc etc etc)
Think about it….The West Mids against the world…
By the way, just so you remember, we have 83 points so far whilst you got up last year with 81.(Stoke with 79) You scored 88 goals while we have so far scored 77 (and with key forwards injured for large parts of the season).
So I hope you guys see our performance to be on a par with your excellent season last year – in regard to the league anyway. We were crap in the cups.

8 Excellent gesture well done
10 I’m glad someone represented Wolves. thanks for telling us.
12 You sure there’s a B?
Nice one Terry. You’re a gem

What a shame you didn’t review the management team—-here is my view—TM–3 /10 an awful season full of silly comments and a complete lack of tactical nous. MV—-1/10 Why is he there? Is he our defence coach? If so my score is very generous. PG—0/10—since he came in we have got worse and worse. Corrigan–0/10—Carson has shown how JC coaching skills are! Fitness Coach—should be renamed unfitness coach!JP—1/10—time to move onto the Bahamas.
The only backroom successes are our Academy staff and Appleton. All of the above should move on.

10 – Terry, Google is a wonderful and beautiful thing. Type Mary D’s Manchester and it’ll bring up a map straight away. I’ve been told by a mate of mine that this is an away friendly pub, so gonna give it a try. Thanks for representing the Albion at Anfield mate.
6 – Shadrag, I’m just fine n dandy thanks honey.
I must say, your ball has got much bigger now you’re just 3 points off promotion. Love you xxxxxxxxx
Report abuse
Glyn, I agree with you 100%.
Sadly, there’s far too many who’ve become so enamoured of Mowbray’s loudly-hailed love of ‘flowing, passing football’ (the kind that sees us walloped almost every week) that it’s become this idiot love affair with him that thinks he’ll become the West Midlands version of Arsene Wenger, so, in their eyes, he can do no wrong.
Even if he’s done quite a bit of wrong this season, backing or no.
8, Terry that is great stuff mate. This week certainly puts things into perspective.
How about a cheeky 150k bid to blues and bring back Kevin Phillips for next season? I think Robbie Blake from Burnley is an albion type of player also.
With regards to TOMO I think he is trying to boost his own profile but it has backfired and now he is a bit of a laughing stock unfortunately.
I think that Wolves will go out and really give the premiership a good go this time. Experience is a vital ingredient but in the same squad you need pace and a goal scorer. Mick didnt get the financial support from Sunderland (then they gave 60mil to keane?!) but he has this time and I am backing the Wolves to stay up.

Not a lot I could disagree with there Jarrod.
I think you’ve concisely summed up the voice of the terrace.
I think we can hold on to Koren but Morrison is probably going to leave. Olsson too should stay as his season was so broken up – the only place I can see him going is Fulham to replace Hangaland (sp?) when he leaves.
Hopefully Robinson leaves – I’m fed up of the “will he won’t he” that we get every year – it’s more boring than Ronaldo and Madrid!
I agree we need to keep Brunt too – although he should be disposed of when (now there’s confidence for you) we get promoted again next season. He’s not a Premiership player.
Anyone seen anything of Beevers (behave!) this season? He was being touted around last summer but stayed with Sheff Weds as far as I know.
I also think we should keep Meite.
However, saying all that – the unexpected may still happen…… ;)
Good post and agree with most of your ratings. Meite has got to go as have Valero, Moore and Kim. Do not think we ever had a chance of staying up this season. With no proven goalscorer we were never going to stay up. With Mowbray’s style of football we are fine in the Championship where we do have the best players but will not work where the opposition have the best players then we need a plan B which we do not have. We have not got a single point off any of the current top six teams. I think though we should stick with Mowbray as the club needs a gradual improvement which is what it is getting and personally I enjoy a good performance win or lose. Cox from Swindon would be an excellent buy for next season.

19 – You want gravy all over Tez?
18 – LW, this is the thing with you. At times it’s obvious that know what you’re actually talking about, but constantly twist it in order to have a dig at the Albion. I don’t really see the need to do it, but if that’s what you want to do, then fair enough.
I like Robbie Blake, I think he’s got a great footballing brain and could do the Kevin Phillips role in the Championship for us.
I think that Wolves will struggle, but I agree with you that you’ll spend more and be much better prepared for a crack at it this time than you did last time.
You have a good, honest, young, hard working squad in the main from what I can see, but it’s not good enough, AT THE MOMENT, to stay up. See what the Summer brings transfer wise, don’t expect miracles and you never know. If someone offered you 17th next season in the Prem you’d bite their hand off, as we would obviously.
There’s an Olive branch, up to you if you want to take it?
Great blog, but i’m not sure how Carsin would cope in the Championship with balls flying into the box like every game and big centre forwards crashing into him?
Also well done Terry for the nice gesture
Report abuse
looking back at the season was the failure to sign up kev phillips again the biggest mistake since cloughie wasnt offered the england job
Report abuse
Think you’re being a bit too generous to Robinson.
His big problem is that he’s never in position when the ball comes into his corner of the pitch and he doesn’t have the pace to get back when we lose possession.
When Cech has played he has looked a far far better all-round player. It’s a shame that both Robbo and Cech are likely to want moves in the summer, leaving us with no-one in that position.
22 – thanks for the offer terry – but I’m going to the last ever game at Ninian Park (unless they qualify for the Play Offs – in which case we’ve all been done!) with my Cardiff supporting buddies.
I know where I’d rather be though…..

Some good posts from baggies and dingles alike. You can tell they have had a good season. Any, good post Jarrod, wouldn’t really disagree with many of your makes although 10/10 for Olson might be a bit OTT. He & Mozza would probably be my top 2 for the player of the season. As I have said in previous post, if we keep the nucleus of this side and add a few quality players including a goal scorer and another centre half we will should have a good season next year. Loon, Olson, Clemo, Koren, Mozza, Greening, Tex, Brunt, Dorrans, Miller, Bednar and Fortune (if we can keep him) will be far too a sqaud to many other teams. Overall you summing up Jarrod is spot on, lack of experienced signings (players like Sami Hypia were going for nothing at the start of the season and we could have given him a big signing on fee rather than a massive wage & he or someone like him would have been a massive influence on our younger players) and injuries to key players, Miller, Olson and Greening have been the difference between staying up and going down. To of all Wolves fans, you must learn from our mistakes. Experience & quality are the key.
Not sure about letting Valero go. The Prem. may have been too much too early for him.
He may need more time and could really do well in the CCC next season.
I am still upset at what I see as unprofessional attitudes within the Albion management.
Players signed for the club should be used, not left on the bench or in the reserves because they are not yes men or upset coaching staff.
By all means fine them but use them for the betterment of WBA.
Cech and Bednar could have made a real difference this season and Kiely should have had some games after some of Carsons howlers.
I don’t know what goes on behind the scenes but I am disappointed and frustrated at some of the decision making this season.
Will still be there next season.
Come on you Baggies.

Ned your the best x! Of course I would take 17th place, no question. I am going to have a dig at the albion after this season don’t tell me if wolves had no sponsor, reduced capacity, boardroom court cases etc, but it is only a bit of banter come on! Got nothing against the albion as a whole infact years ago i played for their youth team!
