Keogh urging striker move

Wednesday 15th April 2009, 11:30AM BST.

harewood-21Man of the moment Andy Keogh wants Marlon Harewood to become a permanent addition to Wolves’ Premier League chasing squad.

On-loan Villa striker Harewood set up Keogh’s winner and an equaliser for Matt Jarvis in Monday’s see-saw 3-2 win at Derby after coming off the bench.

Keogh, who scored two at Pride Park, believes the on-loan Villa forward is exactly the sort of player Wolves need if they go up.

Mick McCarthy’s Championship leaders need just a point to clinch promotion.

“He could be a key player for us. He’s got Premier League quality, he’s a great player to have and he’ll carry on making himself a nuisance in the last few games,” said Keogh.

“He wouldn’t be playing for a club like Villa if he hadn’t got that quality, so yes (I’d like to see him here).

“The gaffer has been very good with some signings and I’m sure he’ll make some astute ones when he needs to as well.

“He’s been brilliant, especially with the injuries. He made himself a nuisance against Derby and did really well.”

On-loan winger Kyel Reid, who also played with Harewood at West Ham, said: “He’ll be a good permanent signing for next season because when Wolves go up into the Premier League, it won’t be easy.

“He’s really important for us, especially with the injuries to Chris Iwelumo and Sylvan Ebanks-Blake, who have done well all season.

“We needed a strong lad and a target man to hold the ball up for us so Andy and Sam Vokes could play off him. He’s been a good acquisition and he’s got good attributes.”

Harewood, who has a year left on his contract, remains non-committal on his future. “I don’t know what is happening at Villa, but it’s here that matters for now and I’m just happy being here until the end of the season and then I’ll start again,” he said. “I just want to play football and it’s fantastic to be playing again.

“I’m desperate to play and start scoring again. If I can do that, and help the team out, then that’s brilliant.

“It’s certainly a fantastic time to come here!”

I’ll wait to reserve judgement on him.

Having only seen the blues and Saints games he hardly impressed then. Indeed one of the commentators remarked that had SEB been in his position he would have bust a gut to get to a cross and probably would have turned it in. As it was Harewood seemed to give up.

He started Monday’s game in a similar vein by all accounts. But then redeemed himself with the two assists.

We will need some experienced players next season, Getting there is one thing staying another. I dont want to sound pessimistic, but hopefully we have learned some lessons from our last spell in the top flight. Marlon, may just be one of those players.

Marlon would be a very good squad player perhaps in cameos for the the Prem but defintely for nowhere near £3 million. We could get perhaps better value from the likes of (depending on promition) : Ross McCormack, Kevin Doyle, Jermaine Beckford.

His attitude at Derby was first class, he’s starting to look like a Premiership footballer (again), and it looks like he wants to be here. He’d be a reasonable start to recruitment, I think.
Next up, a class-act central defender (like Mancienne if at all possible) to partner Berra. (Though I hope Jody gets rewarded with a contract to be support, along with Stearman)
I hope and trust that we’re already scouting the reserves of the Champions League teams, the Premiership teams in relegation trouble and Man City, who’ll be having a clear-out.
I’m guessing we shouldn’t expect a bunch of exotic imports. We must have the most British (and Irish) squad in the top 2 divisions, and it feels deliberate.
If UEFA push through their nationality rules, we’ll be already there.

Not sure myself, don’t think he’s good enough or worth it. Simon Cox from swindon town would be a better investment.

Not set the world on fire yet but experienced players like him are a must for next season. I have read in one paper that Wolves will break the wage structure to keep players like Hennessey and Henry. I have two comments to make on this. Firstly both of these players have been very inconsitent this season and although they should be part of the squad, they should by no means be guaranteed as first choice. Secondly, we will have to break the wage structure in any case to get the sort of players we need to try and secure survival. Stoke have bought players like Beattie and I somehow doubt whether he came on a low wage.

I would sooner see the money spent elsewhere. I bet his salary would top anything Wolves players are currently on and I have to say that SEB looks better all round so surely we need to be looking at bettering that even more and I don’t think we would be with Homer Simpson. It’s all about attracting the right players now. The likes of Kevin Doyle would be good for the future but would he leave for a newly promoted side? hmmmm.

OK, guys. If you don’t have one of my novelty football toys yet, now is the time to buy.

Best seller all season has been the ‘Mighty Mick’ doll. And quite rightly. It is inexpensive and gives hours of fun.
If you stand Mighty Mick on your lap and stroke its head it gushes with pleasure.

I would love to see 28000 of you in the Mol on Saturday brandishing your Mighty Mick’s.

I have (2) new lines arriving in the summer.
    One is the MM Mk2.

The design of this one was inspired by a recent interview in which St. Mick likened himself to a god.
It is called ‘Mick Almighty’ and comes complete with halo. It retains all the fun features of the original.

In anticipation of the £60M we will be spending to give us a chance of staying up next season, the other new line is …

A cuddly toy cat called ‘Moxey’.
The cat is overweight, has big, heavy jowls and sports an irritatingly smug expression.
I anticipate he will be very popular.

Please place your orders at http://www.grumpytoys. com.
My personal attention is assured and delivery guarenteed.

We need to wait and see, paying a lot for players is no gaurantee they will perform. I think Harewood would be a good addition, he needs games to get back to his old ways, will he get them I dont know.

I have seen enough of Harewood to convince me he is NOT what we need in the Premier.
He wouldn’t even cut it in the fizzy pop league so if this is an example of Moxeys buying quality we wont survive very long will we.
As for Keoghs comment, I don’t blame him for wanting Harewood to stay because he has made Andy look a good player.
Sucess and sentiment is going to many heads. Reality will kick in very early in the Premier.

Agree with your selections but would prefer Doyle to Scotland but we all surely recognise that a top drawer striker is a priority to play alongside SEB next season. I still think Andy (Keogh) God bless him would be out of his depth week in week out in the Prem.

bullysid. I think you’ll find that if we win on Saturday, not only are we promoted but almost certainly champions also. Wolves have a far superior goal difference to blues and would have to lose both remaining games heavily and for blues to win not only on Saturday but to win their remaining games by considerable scorelines. However, despite this, I don’t want to tempt fate and put a kiss of death on this scenario.

    The Usual Suspects

Regarding Mr Harewood – the club should not “jump in” head first – personally I wouldnt even look to buy the lad next season – a decent agreed loan spell with an agreed fee depending on goals and appearances – 6 games is no time at all to guess how well a player may or may not fit in

Personally Marlon would need a decent pre season and a good 2 to 3 months “bedding in” period

If and its a big IF; someone else comes in for him or Villa recall him after that – well face it if and when it comes

I dont feel that Marlon Harewood should not be part of the 6 or 7 Prem Proven Players – he has a little more about him than Big Chris (maybe a tad more games in a season?) BUT MM & Co need to see more of him BEFORE rushing in and are there 1 or 2 better options out there?

Keep our powder dry – DONT rush in!!!
