Used cars: BMW 6 Series Convertible
Tuesday 14th April 2009, 2:00PM BST.
In 2004 BMW introduces the 6 Series range, featuring both coupe and convertible, writes Iain Dooley.
A powered fabric roof for the convertible came later, with separate control for raising and lowering the glass rear screen.
Initially power came from a 4.4-litre V8. Six cylinder petrol and turbo-diesel units were subsequently introduced.
In 2007, BMW announced a subtle revamp of the 6 and introduced the world’s most powerful production six-cylinder diesel to the range, along with ‘green’ EfficientDynamics technological and active safety features.
Engines
Early on, engine choice was restricted to a big petrol V8 motor. It sounded great though, and was ideal when you wanted to have some fun.
This was made more powerful and a more affordable 3.0-litre six-cylinder unit was also added. And then came a six-pot turbo diesel, which offered both economy and performance.
Exterior
What is there left to say that hasn’t already been said? In truth, the 6 Series is a car you will either love or hate. It’s true that it divides opinion – but it’s just that, opinion.
For some the convertible version is easier on eye. That’s certainly a good reason to lower the car’s roof as much as possible.
Interior
Built just like any other BMW at this price level, it’s hard to find fault with any aspect of the car’s interior.
Although a genuine four-seater, those in the back probably won’t want to spend all day there. Up front it’s positively palatial.
Driving
Boasting the classic front engine, rear-wheel drive layout, the 6 Series is capable of cosseting you one moment and exciting you the next.
Despite its size, the big BMW is a surprisingly nimble machine on the move, and the engines all deliver a performance worthy of something displaying the BMW badge.
Ownership
Like so many modern luxury cars, the 6 Series ownership experience is a rewarding one. The German firm’s reliability and durability reputation is second to none, while the everyday driving experience always feels special.
Roof down motoring adds a welcome extra dimension; the big fabric roof is electrically operated and offers coupe refinement when raised.
What To Look For
Used and abused cars are rare. Anything used as a city runabout should be easy to spot: parking dents and scrapes, kerbed wheels, dirty engine bay, suspiciously low mileage.
A thorough test drive is essential for such a complex car, as is a history check. Be on your guard for stolen cars, crash-repaired examples, or vehicles with outstanding finance.
SECOND GLANCE:
Reasons to Buy:
Distinctive styling, good range of impressive engines, convertible roof ease of use, a car for keen drivers.
Reasons to Beware:
Styling won’t please everyone, thirsty V8 engines, manual gearbox less desirable than automatic.

630i Sport Convertible Auto.
