Making the most of your cut dahlias: Make sure you use a clean vase as dahlia stems are hollow and will clog up if the water contains bacteria from residue on the vase.

Cut the stems once you get them home and dip them in boiling water for a few seconds before putting them in a lot of cold water.

Dahlias are thirsty flowers – they need the water to support their many petals, so make sure the water is regularly topped up, and remove leaves to reduce transformation.

Change the water every two days if you’re using cut flower food, and every day if you’re using plain water.

Finally, re-cut the stems whenever you change the water.
